‘The Umbrella Academy’ Creator Hints ‘Sparrow Academy’ Will Include a ‘Very Big Reveal’
The Season 2 finale of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy left fans with a major cliffhanger and plenty of burning questions. Series’ creator Gerard Way is currently working on a new story for the comic book series the Netflix show is based on. And he recently revealed that the next volume, Sparrow Academy will include a “very big reveal.”

‘The Umbrella Academy’ is based on a comic book series by Gerard Way
Netflix’s superhero series, The Umbrella Academy, is based on the Eisner award-winning graphic novels created by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, featuring illustrations by Gabriel Bá. First published by Dark Horse Comics in 2007, the comic books evolved into a limited series with three volumes — Apocalypse Suite, Dallas, and Hotel Oblivion — and four additional short stories — Mon Dieu, But the Past Ain’t Through With You, Safe & Sound, and Anywhere But Here. Way and Bá developed their story for Netflix, and currently serve as co-executive producers of the show.
Season 1 of The Umbrella Academy is based on the first comic book of the series, Apocalypse Suite. And Season 2 follows the events of Dallas, the second book in the comic series.
Season 3 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ may be about the new Sparrow Academy
It’s unclear which story Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy will be based on. But as seen in the finale, it will likely have something to do with Sir Reginald Hargreeves’ new school, The Sparrow Academy.
In the final episode of Season 2, Five (Aidan Gallagher) manages to save his siblings and uses a Commission briefcase to take them all back to 2019. But when they arrive, they discover that their original timeline has changed. The Umbrella Academy no longer exists, Ben is still alive, and Reginald is now running what he calls The Sparrow Academy.
The series’ creator reveals plans for his next comic, ‘Sparrow Academy’
The third volume of The Umbrella Academy comic book series is called Hotel Oblivion, and it ends on the same note as the Season 2 finale. Way is currently writing Vol. 4, Sparrow Academy, so the Netflix series will likely continue its story from there.
In a recent interview with Forbes, Way noted that Dark Horse Comics has yet to set a release date for Vol. 4. But he promised that the story will unravel some of the characters’ biggest mysteries.
“[It] deals with a very big reveal in the Umbrella Academy universe, something that had been secret for a long time, and our siblings learn a lot about what was happening behind the scenes, as well as discovering the true nature of some characters that have been with them since the beginning,” Way said. “The series finally starts to answer the question: ‘What about the other babies born on that day, in that moment?’ The Umbrella Academy siblings are not alone in the world anymore.”
The show offered a glimpse of Reginald’s recruits in the new timeline, and it’s not far-fetched to think that these are the other babies Way is talking about. And as far as the big reveal is concerned, he could be hinting at Reginald’s true identity, which may be alien-like.
Netflix hasn’t announced a Season 3 renewal yet. But given the popularity of the show and its cliffhanger ending, there’s a good chance it will return to follow the events of Way’s upcoming Sparrow Academy comic.
