Harlan is introduced to Viktor Hargrees in ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 2
Harlan Cooper (Justin Paul Kelly) and his mother Sissy (Marin Ireland) accidentally hit Viktor Hargreeves (Elliot Page) with their car when he lands in 1963 Dallas, Texas, at the beginning of The Umbrella Academy Season 2. A seemingly normal kid, Viktor notices there’s something special about Harlan. One fateful day, after finding out Viktor plans on running away, Harlan runs to the lake and accidentally drowns. Viktor saves Harlan and ends up transferring some of his White Violin powers to the boy in the process.
Later in the season, Harlan struggles to control his newfound powers. After a battle with The Commission, Viktor tries to strip Harlan of his newfound abilities. This seems to work until the final moments of The Umbrella Academy Season 2 when it’s revealed Harlan still possesses the White Violin’s telekinetic abilities.
Harlan Cooper AKA Lester Pocket wipes the Umbrella Academy from existence in season 3
Harlan first appears in The Umbrella Academy Season 3 as Lester Pocket (Callum Keith Rennie), an older man with seemingly no ties to the story. However, Lester’s sensitivity to sound hints that he’s the grown-up version of Harlan Cooper.
When the remaining members of the Sparrow Academy face-off with the Hargreeves at the Hotel Obsidian, Lester/Harlan saves the day. Viktor is the first to realize Lester is a grown Harlan.
Later in the season, Viktor discovers what happened to Harlan’s mother, Sissy. She and Harlan moved around a lot after leaving Texas because of his unexplainable abilities. Eventually, Sissy got cancer and died on Oct. 1, 1989 — the same day the Umbrella Academy was to be born.
Except in this timeline, they don’t exist. That’s because Harlan exploded with rage when Sissy died, killing the mothers of the would-be Hargreeves siblings. In addition to the Kugelblitz slowly wiping out existence, the Hargreeves have to figure out a way to go back in time and correct the timeline so they exist.
Viktor Hargreeves can’t save Harlan Cooper
Once again, Viktor promises to help Harlan in The Umbrella Academy Season 3. However, a bitter Allison Hargreeves (Emmy Raver-Lampman) wants nothing more than to hurt Harlan after finding out he’s partly the reason she can’t return to her original timeline and be with her daughter.
Mid-way through The Umbrella Academy Season 3, Harlan successfully transfers his powers back to Viktor. Afterward, Allison kills Harlan and presents him to the Sparrow Academy as a show of good faith. Devastated, Viktor and Allison are at odds once again.
In the end, Allison is reunited with her daughter. But she and her siblings are all missing something in the new timeline — their powers.
