The Sparrow Academy’s Powers Are No Match for the Hargreeves Siblings in ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3
The Umbrella Academy returns to Netflix with new episodes and new super siblings on June 22. Meet the members of the Sparrow Academy and find out what powers each of them possesses. Hint: most of their abilities are greater than anything the Hargreeves siblings are capable of. We also have details about how these characters compare to the Dark Horse comics that inspired the series.
[SPOILER ALERT: Minor spoilers ahead for The Umbrella Academy Season 3.]
The Umbrella Academy is the Sparrow Academy in another timeline
Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy is inspired by the Dark Horse comics by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. Season 3 picks up where the Hotel Oblivion comic left off, but makes tweaks to the comic books’ Sparrow storyline. For example, the Sparrow’s operate out of Norway in the comics. In the Netflix series, they appear in a new timeline.
Additionally, The Umbrella Academy comics don’t give much detail about the Sparrows. However, the Netflix series leans on these characters for the narrative in season 3 of The Umbrella Academy. When the Hargreeves arrive home to find another family of super siblings living there, a battle ensues and they quickly realize their powers and disjointed way of battle are no match for the team-oriented Sparrows.
Ben is still number 2 in the Sparrow Academy
In season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, Ben Hargreeves (Justin H. Min) is alive and well. He may not be the same Ben from his siblings’ timeline, but Ben’s power is the same. He has the ability to summon eldritch creature-like tentacles through his stomach.
The Sparrow Academy’s #1 Marcus rivals Luther Hargreeves
Marcus (Justin Cornwell) is Number 1 and the leader of the Sparrow Academy. He is first introduced in Hotel Oblivion #7. In the Netflix series, Marcus is the brawn of the Sparrow Academy, rivaling the Umbrella’s Luther (Tom Hopper) and a lot less dopey (which we’re attributing to a lot less time spent on the moon).
Fei’s power involves birds in ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3
Fei (Britne Oldford) is the Sparrow Academy’s number 3. In the comic, the character can levitate, but in The Umbrella Academy Season 3, Fei summons birds to do her bidding — and her seeing – for her.
Alphonso and Jayme are a team of their own
Alphonso (Jake Epstein) and Jayme (Cazzie David) are a package deal in The Umbrella Academy Season 3. Alphonso’s misshapen face is the result of countless fights; his rubber-like ability allows him to deflect attacks back onto his opponents. Meanwhile, Jayme can produce venom that alters the mind of her enemy, causing them to hallucinate.
The Sparrow Academy’s Sloane can control gravity
Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez), Number 5 of the Sparrows, can manipulate gravity, allowing her to take great force over her opponents and their whereabouts. It’s unclear which character from the comics she’s based on.
Christopher the green cube has a multitude of powers
Finally, there’s Christopher, the elusive green cube who had fans speculating after the season 2 finale. The “Existential Dread Inducing Psykronium Cube’s” origins are unknown and his powers are just as elusive. Despite his mysterious ways, Christopher serves a great purpose in The Umbrella Academy Season 3 and offers comedic relief in many episodes in the form of robotic grumbles.
