‘The View’: Meghan McCain Fires Back at John Oliver Indirectly After Getting Slammed by HBO Host
Meghan McCain was blasted by John Oliver for horrible comments she made on The View a year ago. The HBO late-night show host used a segment of Last Week Tonight to call out the Republican loyalist for pushing “racist rhetoric” spewed by Donald Trump. After McCain apologized for aiding Trump, she found some love on Twitter and retweeted Geraldo Rivera.
Why did Meghan McCain defend Donald Trump so passionately?
As the COVID-19 cases rose in the United States back in March 2020, Trump was deflecting blame for his handling of the pandemic so far. The former and twice impeached president referred to the coronavirus as the “China virus.” When the issue was a “Hot Topic” on The View, McCain not only defended Trump but said he should continue using that term.
“I think if the left wants to focus on PC labeling this virus, it is a great way to get Trump reelected,” McCain said back on March 18, 2020. “I don’t have a problem with people calling it whatever they want. It is a deadly virus that did originate in Wuhan.”
McCain said she didn’t have an issue with Trump calling it the “China virus” as that’s where it had originated from. Whoopi Goldberg pointed out that that type of language could lead to violence against people of Asian descent, to which McCain heavily sighed seemingly dismissing her co-host.
Goldberg also recalled that Trump called Mexican migrants “rapists” and “murderers” during his presidential campaign. McCain added that the language was “effective” to get him elected.
John Oliver calls out Meghan McCain
On the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver took on the devastating issue of the mass shootings in Atlanta. He mentioned that the language used by Trump was linked to an uprise in attacks on the Asian American community. After airing the clip from The View, Oliver called out McCain.
“Oh, good! Meghan McCain doesn’t have a problem with this,” Oliver said after watching the clip of McCain on his show. “Listen not to the scores of Asian Americans telling everyone that the term is dangerous and offensive. Instead, gather around and take the word of a wealthy white woman who is dressed like she is about to lay off 47 people over Zoom.”
He also noted that saying she didn’t have a problem with calling it “China virus” was “giving space for that hate to grow,” pointing out a tweet McCain shared saying “Stop Asian Hate.”
Is Meghan McCain salty with John Oliver?
After the HBO show aired, McCain was out of The View the following Monday and issued an apology after the growing backlash for her previous comments.
“I condemn the reprehensible violence and vitriol that has been targeted towards the Asian-American community,” McCain tweeted. “There is no doubt Donald Trump’s racist rhetoric fueled many of these attacks and I apologize for any past comments that aided that agenda.”
However, on Tuesday, McCain was seemingly still upset at Oliver putting her on blast. She retweeted a tweet from Geraldo Rivera that mocked Oliver.
“[John Oliver’s] criticism of Meghan McCain is a reminder of what an unfunny, self-righteous punk he is,” the tweet read.
McCain amplified Rivera’s message name-calling Oliver.
The View airs weekday mornings at 11 a.m. ET and 10 a.m. CT/PT on ABC.
