‘The View’ Star Whoopi Goldberg Apparently Believes in Love at First Sight
Whoopi Goldberg of The View is very clear in her stance on relationships. Married and divorced three times, the EGOT winner is quite vocal on her love of being single.
Though The View moderator has no intention of heading down the aisle again, Goldberg has previously shared that she does still believe in love’s instant lighting bolt.
‘The View’ moderator comments on her marriages
Always keeping it real, Goldberg has been very transparent about her past relationships and reasons for previously tying the knot.
“People expect you to have a boyfriend. They expect you to get married. So I kept trying to do that, but I didn’t want to share information with somebody else,” Goldberg told The New York Times Magazine in August. “I didn’t want anybody asking me why I was doing what I was doing, or to have to make the other person feel better. But if you’re in a relationship, you have to do those things, and it took me a while to figure out that I didn’t want to.”
Realizing that she made marital decisions based on people’s expectations rather than love, the Oscar winner finally chose to chart her own path.
“I’d be thinking, why don’t I feel the thing that I’m supposed to? Then one day I thought: I don’t have to do this. I don’t have to conform,” Goldberg explained. “I tried marriage, and it wasn’t for me. You can’t be in a marriage because everybody’s expecting you to.”
Whoopi Goldberg’s one condition on remarrying
Goldberg appeared on the British talk show Loose Women in 2018, where the co-hosts got into the topic of relationships with The View star. Though the Ghost actress has sworn off marriage, she revealed there’s one way she would consider getting hitched again.
“The only way I could be married to anybody ever again is if they lived in another country,” Goldberg said, to which the panelists and audience roared with laughter. “They could come and visit, it would be like ‘Oh, my goodness, I haven’t seen you in so long. Come here!’ “
When one of the talk show hosts asked Goldberg about her past marriages, she shared that single women are often viewed differently when they choose not to walk down the aisle.
“I’m not cut out for it,” she told the panel of Loose Women. “Remember how people treated women who were not married, you know, or who didn’t fit in that thing… you got treated rather poorly. People talked about you, said ‘what’s wrong’ … like there’s something wrong with you,” adding that she would be treated with that false perception.
EGOT winner on love at first sight
When asked if Goldberg thought the view of single women has evolved, she agreed that there has been a sort of shift in thinking regarding the traditional union.
“I think more people have discovered that [marriage] is not for them. You have to want to be with someone,” Goldberg said, adding that she values her freedom. “You want to have someone in your life because you want to be able to say ‘Where were you? I’m just curious.’ I don’t want anyone asking me … I don’t want them expecting me to be anywhere.”
When a panelist asked if Goldberg believes in love at first sight, she gave an affirmative answer. “I do,” she said, revealing that she thought both love and lust at first sight were possible.
“There are some people where you see and you think ‘I’ve got to have that. I don’t care what else happens in this month, that is coming to my house,’ ” she described to more laughter from the co-hosts and audience. “Then there’s love… then there’s like, ‘Oh, my goodness. Hi. Can I talk to you?’ “
The View moderator revealed that she’s had both experiences and still prefers to be on her own. “I’ve had both and it oftentimes leads to the same thing, which is for me, I do not want to share,” Goldberg maintained. “I don’t want to share, and that’s ok to say.”
