‘The Voice’: Ariana Grande Pays Tribute to ’13 Going On 30′ With Jennifer Garner’s Iconic Jenna Rink Dress
Ariana Grande channeled her inner Jenna Rink for The Voice on Monday, Nov. 8. The pop star surprised fans of Jennifer Garner’s 2004 rom-com 13 Going On 30 by wearing the very same Versace dress that Garner wore in the film. The newcomer Voice coach is a big fan of 13 Going On 30, so many fans loved to see her pay tribute to the coming-of-age movie. Check out her incredible recreation of the iconic look.
Ariana Grande looked just like Jenna Rink in Jennifer Garner’s dress on ‘The Voice’
Grande appeared on The Voice for her very first Live Playoffs in the 13 Going On 30 character’s blue, red, and green striped dress, complete with the same cutouts at the chest and on the sides. She even wore matching blue heels and styled her hair in a messy updo, just like Jenna. Before the show, Grande posted the look on her Instagram Stories and gave a shoutout to the dress’s creator, Donatella Versace.
In 13 Going On 30, 13-year-old Jenna (played by Christa B. Allen) wished that she was 30 years old, and she was suddenly transported into her 30-year-old future self’s body. While navigating her new life as an adult, Jenna quickly realized that “30, flirty, and thriving” wasn’t as great as it sounded. Garner wore the dress as 30-year-old Jenna at a party, where she danced to “Thriller.”
Grande didn’t say much about the look during The Voice, but her fans certainly noticed it. On Twitter, many of Grande’s followers praised the close recreation of the outfit.
“U even got the same hairstyle, earrings, eyeshadow….. Ur missing the necklace, but like hello thank u for dressing up as Jenna Rink, my forever favorite character in one of my fave movies like hello ??” one fan wrote.
“Ariana Grande as Jenna Rink is a dream come true,” another user added.
Ariana Grande previously made herself known as a ’13 Going On 30′ fan
This wasn’t the first time Grande dressed as the 13 Going On 30 character. In 2019, the singer paid homage to some of her favorite films with her “Thank U, Next” music video. She recreated scenes from Mean Girls, Bring It On, Legally Blonde, and 13 Going On 30. This time, she wore Jenna’s blouse and jeans outfit from her final scene as a 30-year-old before going back to her 13-year-old self.
During a 2021 interview with Allure, Grande broke down the music video, revealing that she wanted to honor her favorite comedies.
“We were working on ‘Breathin’, and I was like … we have to recreate all my favorite scenes from all my favorite movies to make the ‘thank u, next’ video,” she explained.
November 2021 is a big month for ’13 Going On 30′
Grande didn’t mention a specific reason for wearing Jenna’s outfit on The Voice. However, it could have something to do with the film’s milestone moment in November: Christa B. Allen turns 30 on Nov. 11. The young Jenna Rink will finally reach her 30, flirty, and thriving days in real life.
Earlier this year, Allen celebrated the milestone with an essay for Allure. She wrote about what it feels like to turn 30 and how 13 Going On 30 has affected her perspective on the age. The essay reads, in part:
Because of that role, I have such a personal connection with anyone who was touched by the film. I feel invisibly bound to people turning 13, 30, and everyone in between. They reach out to me by the hundreds, sharing joy or trepidation at reaching these milestones. I have become a mirror of sorts, reflecting back to them the intense feelings they have about reaching these ages. But I feel conflicted … The numbers of my age are meaningless to me because time isn’t real. Time is a construct. Time is circular. As I approach 30, I have a better understanding of some things, specifically how the world works, how I fit into it, and how I try not to attach too much meaning to the way others see me, but rather how I see myself.
Tune in to The Voice on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC.
