For 27 seasons, NBC’s The Voice has showcased America’s top talent as superstar coaches shaped rising artists from those iconic red chairs. Many of music’s biggest legends have taken a spin—but some didn’t stay long. Which Voice coaches lasted just two seasons or less? Let’s break it down.

Shakira joined The Voice as a coach during seasons 4 and 6, bringing her global star power and a fresh perspective to the panel. Her time on the show was marked by a dynamic coaching style, close mentorship with her team, and fiery chemistry with fellow coaches like Blake Shelton and Usher.

She took Cee Lo Green’s spot after season 3 concluded. Shakira helped her contestants, like Judith Hill and Garrett Gardner, make it far in the competition, but she didn’t score one win.

Usher: Seasons 4, 6

NBC reports that Usher holds the record for having the most contestants stolen by other coaches during the Battle Rounds. Subsequently, Usher stole Josh Kaufman from Team Adam, and eventually won during season 6.

Usher was known for being very hands-on during the Battle Rounds. He not only concentrated on a contestant’s vocal skills but polished their performance skills and stage presence.

Miley Cyrus: Seasons 11, 13

For two seasons, Miley Cyrus set a Voice record as its youngest coach ever. Her coaching style was nurturing, and her teams became known for their tight-knit, family-like vibe.

In season 11, Miley helped contestant Ali Caldwell reach the Top 10. However, she never won during her two seasons as a coach.

Jennifer Hudson: Seasons 13, 15

During The Voice Seasons 13 and 15, American Idol alum Jennifer Hudson coached. She didn’t win either season.

Jennifer brought a refreshing new dynamic to the panel, combining humor with an empowering mentorship style. Her interactions with the other coaches—especially Blake Shelton—were always filled with a biting, but playful banter.

Nick Jonas: Seasons 18, 20

Nick Jonas made his debut as a coach in season 18, joining Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, and John Legend. During season 18, one of Nick’s artists, Thunderstorm Artis, made it to the Top 5, a huge achievement for Nick as a first-time coach.

During season 20, Nick achieved his first win on The Voice with Cam Anthony. This mentorship was a major highlight for Nick, showing his growth as a coach and his ability to nurture talent from the ground up.

Ariana Grande: Season 21

Ariana Grande replaced Nick Jonas for season 21. She only lasted with The Voice for one season.

While she fought hard to recruit the best talent during the Blind Auditions, she was unsuccessful at taking the top spot. However, Ariana was strategic in selecting the right pairings and coached her artists to stand out, adding to the excitement of the season.

Camilla Cabello: Season 22

Camilla Cabello was only featured as a coach during season 22 of The Voice.  She coached KJ Jennings and Samuel Harness, who performed Cabello and Shawn Mendes’ “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

Camila’s experience as a former member of Fifth Harmony and her successful solo career made her a valuable industry resource for her contestants. Despite her efforts, she didn’t win.

Niall Horan: Seasons 23-24

Niall Horan made his coaching debut in season 23, joining Blake Shelton (in his final season), Kelly Clarkson, and Chance the Rapper. Fans were excited to see how his musical background would translate to coaching, and he quickly proved himself as a strong mentor.

He proved to be a strong contender in his two seasons as a Voice coach. Horan mentored two consecutive winners, Gina Miles in season 23 and Huntley in season 24.

Chance the Rapper: Seasons 23, 25

During season 23, Chance the Rapper joined The Voice as a coach alongside Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, and Niall Horan. Chance’s time on The Voice was well-received, and there was much excitement about the prospect of him returning for future seasons, but he only returned one more time for season 25.

Chance’s coaching style was rooted in his belief that music should transcend genres, and he encouraged his team to experiment with different styles and sounds. He was highly supportive and often pushed his contestants to think outside the box.

Dan + Shay: Season 25

Dan + Shay were coaches on season 25 of The Voice, which premiered on NBC in February 2024. The country-pop duo were the first coaching duo in the show’s history. However, they only lasted one season due to their touring schedule.

They sat in the show’s first red double chair. Dan + Shay ultimately lost their season to Reba McEntire.

Snoop Dogg: Season 26

Snoop Dogg joined Reba McEntire, Gwen Stefani, and Michael Bublé as one of four coaches on season 26 of The Voice. His contract at the time was for season 26 only.

However, he later told Voice host Carson Daly at the season’s close that he would love to coach again. He said, “It’s been a great experience for me. I didn’t know what I was signing on to, but I do know it feels like I could come back and do it again.”

The Voice season 27 premieres Monday, Feb. 3, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. It airs the next day on Peacock.
