‘The Witcher’: Anya Chalotra Teases Yennefer’s ‘Epic Journey’
Netflix’s version of The Witcher is set to premiere soon. One of the main characters is Yennefer of Vengerberg, portrayed by Anya Chalotra. According to the actress herself, Yennefer will go through a wonderful arc throughout the show.
What is it exactly that drew Chalotra to the role of Yennefer in The Witcher? How does she describe her character and the arc she goes on? Find out, ahead.
What drew Anya Chalotra to the role of Yennefer in ‘The Witcher’?
According to the actress herself, in an interview with Stylist, the character of Yennefer in The Witcher “has so many amazing attributes.” Chalotra also told Stylist “what sets [Yennefer] apart from all the mages on the Continent.” She described it like this: “If there’s a wall, and there’s a crack in that wall, she will find a way to get through that crack – whereas most people will just say no, there’s a wall and I’m not going to get through it.”
This approach to problem-solving is, according to Chalotra, what attracted her to the part. She says that “that’s something [she recognizes] in [herself] and which attracted [her] to play Yennefer.” Chalotra goes on to say that “Yennefer has changed [her] life.”
What did Anya Chalotra say about Yennefer’s ‘epic journey’ in ‘The Witcher’?
The actress told Stylist that Yennefer will go on an “epic journey” throughout The Witcher. According to Chalotra, this arc “is such an exciting challenge for an actor.” Chalotra goes on to say that she “[plays Yennefer] from the age of 14 to when she is in her late 70s.”
Chalotra also describes Yennefer as “very unapologetic and she uses her rage — which is exciting for any actor.” Yennefer is also “strong-willed, she’s witty and she’s very intelligent and quick.” Chalotra adds that Yennefer “is just a very strong character because of all her attributes, and [she thinks] that is something to be celebrated and hopefully will be in [the show].”
What does Anya Chalotra think of portraying her character Yennefer?
Chalotra seems to mostly be excited at how her life might be about to change. According to the actress, “it’s very flattering” to be compared to Game of Thrones already. There is “an excitement” because of such comparisons. Though she never watched the HBO show herself, she “only [hopes] for similar success with The Witcher because wow – that would be amazing.”
She also finds the size of The Witcher’s fan base “overwhelming.” According to the actress, with that fan base comes “so many opinions flying around – and with that comes negative and positive comments – but [she] only [takes] the positive away, and there is so much positivity out there. If [she focuses] on that, it’s an exciting time.”
Chalotra also says that “It hit [her] like a ton of bricks when the casting came out. [She’s] in control of [her] social media, [she] can shut it off when [she wants] to and when it gets too in [her] head, and [she] can interact with the fans when [she wants] to, too.” She goes on to say that she “can only do [her] job and do the best [she] can as an actor” and that since The Witcher is a fantasy story, Yennefer can be played by anyone since “fantasy is a world where anyone fits in.”
