Netflix gave fans of The Witcher more than a few reasons to get excited this week, with its WitcherCon streaming event revealing the show’s Season 2 release date and trailer. The event also answered one question fans have had since the first season ended: whether or not they’ll see Jaskier (Joey Batey) again. Although he’s a side character, Batey’s bard stole fans’ hearts during Season 1 — and they won’t soon forget it. Following argument with Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), however, fans wondered if he’d return in the new season. It seems they finally have an answer.

Who is Jaskier and why do fans love him?

To understand why The Witcher fanbase holds so much appreciation for Jaskier, one has to understand who he is. A bard Geralt runs into relatively early on in the series, Jaskier becomes the Witcher’s right-hand man. Geralt is reluctant to befriend the bard, but Jaskier comically follows him around until he warms up to him.

Geralt does eventually become fond of Jaskier, too, at least for a little while. Later in the season, Geralt becomes frustrated with the bard and blames his misfortunes on him. The two have a falling out, and Jaskier doesn’t make another appearance. While the duo was together, however, they proved a hilariously fun match. Fans would no doubt love to see that dynamic return in some form, and to see the pair resolve their issues with one another in The Witcher Season 2.

Jaskier is also responsible for the song “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher,” which the Netflix series has become known for. The catchy tune about Geralt and his escapades quickly became a hit after the series debuted, cementing the fandom’s love for Jaskier even further.

Jaskier will return for ‘The Witcher’ Season 2

Despite Jaskier’s falling out with Geralt at the end of last season, it looks like the bard will make a comeback in Season 2. Amid the many announcements at WitcherCon, Netflix shared a look at the character in the second season on Twitter — and suggested a new original song might be on the horizon.

“The bard is back with another breakaway pop hit,” Netflix Geeked wrote. “Here’s your first look at Jaskier in The Witcher Season 2!”

The picture shows Jaskier playing his lute, and whatever he’s singing, it looks like he’s putting a ton of emotion behind it. Could he be performing the “breakaway pop hit” the tweet promised? It’s hard to imagine any song in The Witcher Season 2 could outdo “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher,” but the series could surprise fans.

Jaskier may be making a comeback this December, but the character looks a far cry different than he did in Season 1. The bard appears to be sporting a scruffier style in Season 2 of The Witcher, with long hair and the beginnings of a beard. He’s also got a new get-up, which includes a red leather jacket and a hat.

Netflix pointed out his “new do” on Twitter, and fans were quick to respond. The comments and retweets went from calling the bard a “fashion icon” to pointing out how much he pulls off the hat.

Whether the new look will help Jaskier with his music career is another story, one that may unfold in the upcoming episodes. The Witcher Season 2 arrives on Netflix on Dec. 17, 2021.
