‘The Wonder’ Star Florence Pugh Calls Victorian Thriller ‘Beautiful and Exciting’; Here’s How to Watch the Netflix Movie
Summer is always a good time for movie fans, with new content hitting theaters as well as streaming services like Netflix. Although many pop culture fanatics will stream shows like Stranger Things, others look forward to all-new movies, such as the upcoming film The Wonder.
The film, helmed by acclaimed actor Florence Pugh, has been in the works for several years. In the summer of 2021, fans were given their first glimpse of the movie when the Midsommar star took to Instagram to share a special sneak peek of The Wonder — and the initial image has everyone on the edge of their seats, waiting for more news.
What is Netflix’s ‘The Wonder’ about?
The Wonder is an adaptation of a novel by Emma Donoghue. Set in Ireland in the 1800s, the film combines elements of psychological horror and drama, as it follows a young girl named Anna O’Donnell, who suddenly stops eating – and in the days that follow, she shocks everyone by seemingly remaining healthy and well, in spite of her intense fast. When an English nurse named Lib is brought to Anna’s village to observe her, things take a dark turn – and soon, everyone is questioning the reality of the situation.
According to Variety, The Wonder is the first in a special series by Netflix to shine a spotlight on emerging talent from the U.K. Donoghue, who wrote the novel that the film is based on, is serving as an executive producer and a screenwriter on the movie, helping to bring her vision to life. It also features a star-studded cast, including Florence Pugh, Tom Burke, Ciaran Hinds, and Elaine Cassidy.
Florence Pugh plays the leading role in ‘The Wonder’
Pugh is coming to The Wonder fresh from a series of successful roles in movies like Marvel’s Black Widow and Little Women. In The Wonder, Pugh is portraying Lib Wright, the English nurse who is brought in to study Anna when the young girl is well into her puzzling fast. The actor is clearly excited about the film and is deeply inspired by the source material.
In August 2021, Pugh took to Instagram to share an official first look at The Wonder – and to open up about the process of filming it. “We’ve been traipsing around the Irish hills for the last week and it’s truly been a magnificent start to a beautiful and exciting film,” Pugh wrote. “What a story to get our teeth stuck into, what a crew to be working alongside and a fantastic director Sebastian Lelio to be leading us! This will be fun.”
When will ‘The Wonder’ hit Netflix?
Not only will Pugh undeniably make an impact on viewers in The Wonder – but fans are fully expecting to be wowed by director Sebastián Lelio’s vision as well. According to Vogue, Lelio will likely imprint his signature style on the flick. A native of Chile, Lelio has worked on productions like Gloria and A Fantastic Woman. For his work on 2017’s A Fantastic Woman, Lelio won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. With that level of talent, it’s no wonder that fans are excited for The Wonder.
Currently, The Wonder has not been given a release date, and Netflix hasn’t released any new stills or videos of the film. However, Looper reports that the film is likely to be released on Netflix sometime in the later part of 2022 – so fans should stay tuned for photos or trailers to be released in the coming months.
