‘The Young and the Restless’: Peter Bergman on Jack Abbott’s New Status in the Abbott Family
Peter Bergman is one of daytime television’s legends. The Young and the Restless star has played Jack Abbott for years on the CBS soap opera, and now, the character is entering a new phase. He talked about Jack’s new position in a recent interview.
Peter Bergman is a veteran cast member of ‘The Young and the Restless’
The actor was already established in daytime television before he headed to The Young and the Restless. His first soap opera stint was on All My Children. He was previously Dr. Cliff Warner the soap opera beginning in 1989. He was on the series for about 10 years before the show let him go. Though it may have been unfortunate at the time, it all seemed to work out because, in the same year, The Young and the Restless cast him as the new Jack after the character’s first portrayer quit. Terry Lester originated the role of Jack.
Bergman has now played Jack since 1989, becoming one of the longest-serving cast members on the show. His time on the show is only rivaled by cast members like Eric Braeden, Melody Thomas Scott and Jess Walton. Not only is Jack an important character in the history of the show, but in the greater fabric of daytime television.
“When I started in this business on All My Children [as Cliff], I was 26. James Mitchell [Palmer] started at the same time,” he said in an interview. “Looking at James, I realized that this was a job to take very seriously. In daytime, you get to work as an actor. Never ever take that for granted. I have since gone on to impress that to anyone on this show that I can. I tell them that this is a job, it’s a great job, and I’m eager to help you if I can.”

He is most known for being the son of John Abbott, and later, the patriarch of the Abbott family. However, his most overarching storyline may be his longtime feud with Victor Newman. He has been married to Patty Williams, Lindsey Wells, Nikki Newman, Luan Volien, Phyllis Summers, and Sharon Newman. He has two children Keemo Volien Abbott and Kyle Abbott.
Recently, Jack has a new official role in the Abbott family. While. he. was already the patriarch, he is the head of the family now that his mother, Dina Abbott Mergeron, has passed away.
“Jack started out as the bad boy scion to the family fortune,” Bergman recently told SoapHub. He’s learned about empathy from getting his heart broken and from failing to live up to what he thinks his father wanted him to be. He’s struggled through his relationships with his sisters [Ashley, Eileen Davidson, and Traci, Beth Maitland], and their mother leaving them at a young age. All of these things including his father’s passing, possibly the biggest single event in his life, have strengthened Jack.”
