‘The Young and the Restless’: Why Cane and Lily Fans Are the Most Dedicated in All of Soaps
Cane Ashby and Lily Winters make up one of the most popular relationships in all of daytime television. These two The Young and the Restless characters, portrayed by Daniel Goddard and Christel Khalil, may not make up “Lane” at this moment, but it is always interesting to look back at their impact.
A short history of Cane Ashby and Lily Winters on ‘The Young and the Restless’
Winters is a legacy character on the show as the daughter of Neil and Drucilla Winters. It was thought that Cane Ashby was a legacy character as well, before it was revealed that he was not real Phillip Chancellor III and son of Jill Abbott. Cane and Lily we married from 2009 to 2011, and then again from 2012 to 2019. They have two children together, twins Charlie and Maddie Ashby.
Though the two gained a legion of fans, their age gap was critiqued by some. It is a critique that Khalil talked about in a 2019 interview with Soaps.com.
“I’m all for it,” she said, this time referring to Cane’s potential May-September romance with Traci Abbott. ” I think there are so many times [in soaps] when you have an older man and a younger woman. What’s funny is that they’re actually closer in age than Daniel and I were. When our characters started getting together, I was 19 and he was 35. It’s funny how when it’s an older man, we don’t think anything of it. When it’s an older woman, we are so weirded out by it. So I actually love it. I think it’s great.”
Years ago, Cane and Lily fans pulled this stunt
Both Cane and Lily fans, as well as fans of their romantic pairing known as “Lane” are known to be very over the top.
As Daytime Confidential notes, fans hired a blimp in 2011 when Goddard was in “tense drama behind-the-scenes.” Then in 2012, fans did a similar thing when they hired a plane to fly over the studio when Khalil was in intense contract negotiations. This isn’t something that. is out of the ordinary for The Young and the Restless fans or soap fans in general. Fans of former Adam Newman actor Michael Muhney did the same thing, chartering a plane to fly a banner saying “NO ADAM NEWBIE, JUST MICHAEL MUHNEY” when he was fired.
Though the two aren’t together on the soap opera right now, as we know, everything always comes back around in soap operas. On the two breaking up, Khalil said in the same 2019 interview, “I think it was a valid reason. There’s been a lot of infidelity in their relationship. This was at a point where she’s in prison, locked up, away from her family and kids and everything she knows,” she shared. “So it’s a very vulnerable place to be in and then to have Cain [sic] do something like that, I think it made a lot of sense to get divorced.”
Maybe one of these days in the near feature, “Lane” will get back together and fans will have their dreams come true once again!
