There’s a Massive Plot Hole in ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2’ Involving Alice’s Visions
Adapting books to movies can be challenging; not only is there a worry to get things right, but filmmakers also have to take into account lore and “rules” within the book when it comes to supernatural stories.
With Twilight, which consists of several “rules” and mythology around the vampires, wolves, and their powers, this was definitely an aspect filmmakers had to keep an eye on. For the most part, they did well. But there is one major plot hole caused by inconsistencies with vampire rules, and it’s in the final installment.
Alice’s visions isn’t able to see Jacob Black and the werewolves’ futures
Even though Twilight foreshadowed the wolves, it’s not until New Moon that they show up. Jacob Black turns into one halfway through the movie, becoming a part of the Quileute tribe’s pack of shapeshifting protectors. They use the term “werewolves,” but later on, the books differentiate the two.
Regardless, Bella becomes very connected with Jacob and spends a lot of time with the tribe. When she jumps off the cliff — as a part of her plan to see those apparitions of Edward when she’s in danger or having an adrenaline rush — Alice sees that. But what makes her panic and tell the other Cullens is the fact that she can’t see Jacob pull Bella out of the water. When she comes back to Bella’s house later, she’s very shocked (and annoyed) that she couldn’t see Jacob’s actions.
If that’s the case, why can she see his future in Breaking Dawn: Part 2?
The way that Alice’s visions work in the books and movies is that she can see the future based on decisions. As Edward says in the first movie, the future is always shifting based on what people decide. So Alice could see Bella’s decision to cliff jump way before Bella actually did (because she was pretty determined). She came to Forks because she was convinced Bella died, because her future vanished.
In ‘Breaking Dawn Part 2,’ that changes
Fast-forward to Breaking Dawn and there’s yet another being that Alice can’t see: Renesmee. As soon as Bella became pregnant, her future became fuzzy for Alice, which alarmed her. This is partially why Alice was one of the many Cullens against Bella going through with her pregnancy. She couldn’t see whether Bella lived or died.
In the books, it’s hypothesized that because Alice was never a shapeshifter (like Jacob) nor a hybrid vampire/human (like Renesmee) she can’t see their decisions. It’s like, because she doesn’t have insight into the way their minds are made, she can’t make out what decisions they choose. The way that she finds Nahuel in Breaking Dawn is by knowing other vampire/human hybrids exist in Brazil and looking for blind spots. Those blindspots point to children like Nahuel.
So, in the final scenes of Breaking Dawn Part 2, Alice shouldn’t be able to see adult Renesmee and Jacob together with Bella and Edward. But she can in the movie.
This is, of course, a massive plot hole. It’s obviously a blind spot of the writers and filmmakers since they’re using it as a way to show that they’re going to be alright. To show the future now that the series is finished. This, of course, isn’t in the books. But for the movie, it’s a narrative device, so they weren’t really worried about interfering with the rules of this world.
Some theories can explain this plot hole
However, if you want to look for an explanation as to how this is possible, there are some ways to find “answers.” For one, the movie doesn’t go as in-depth as the books do into why Alice can’t see Jacob and Renesmee. Yes, it’s mentioned a few times, but that’s about it.
So, with that movie-logic, it’s possible that the long hours with Jacob and his pack in Breaking Dawn Part 1 and 2 gave Alice a lot more insight into their minds. And by working with them, she was able to see them more and more. This is what Reddit user u/HRHPrincessofEire guessed.
“She can’t really see the wolves’ futures, maybe, but I imagine that since the coven is involved in the same fight with the wolves, perhaps she sees them because of her connection to the coven, rather than seeing them separately,” they wrote. They also hypothesized that because Jacob imprinted on Renesmee, who’s in her coven and related to Edward, maybe it strengthened her ability with them.
The fansite Twilight Lexicon also hypothesized that Alice was actually viewing Edward and Bella’s futures, only. This also goes for the big battle scene, which is essentially just a vision in Alice’s mind, which she’s showing Aro.
Any theory trying to explain this is a bit hazy just because it’s never explained why all of a sudden Alice can see Jacob and Renesmee’s futures, or see how the wolves fought against the Volturi. But, considering it’s all a fictional world anyway, anything can happen, right?
