These Photos Show Just How Close Kate Middleton Is With Prince Philip
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge is one of the most popular members of the British royal family. The 38-year-old has fans all over the world as well as some close to home. She counts her grandfather-in-law Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, as one of her supporters. Keep reading to see photos of the two royals that demonstrate just how close they are to each other.
Prince Philip initially didn’t want Prince William to date Kate Middleton
Despite having a good relationship with Catherine today, originally Philip wasn’t pleased with the idea of his grandson dating the future Duchess of Cambridge. William actually defied his grandfather’s wishes to be with Catherine.
Philip suggested William join the Royal Navy. Second in the royal family’s line of succession, William went against his grandfather and decided to remain in the U.K., choosing to train at Sandhurst during his service with the British Armed Forces. That way he and Catherine wouldn’t be separated for months on end.
Previously, Philip used the same tactic on his son, Prince Charles. Years earlier Philip suggested Charles join the Royal Navy to get him away from Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, whom he’d been dating at the time. Charles took the suggestion as an order and joined the navy, which put an end his romance with Camilla.
Even though he didn’t wasn’t fond of Catherine from the start, Philip has come to enjoy her company.
They are always friendly to each other at royal events
Whenever they step out in public together, it seems the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke of Edinburgh always share some pleasant words. Attending the Royal Windsor Horse in 2016 with Queen Elizabeth II, Catherine and Philip made their own conversation.
They talked as they admired the show.
And at the queen’s birthday celebration in 2016 in honor of her turning 90, Catherine and Philip were all smiles.
They even shared a few laughs together.
Kate Middleton and Prince Philip have fun at Trooping the Colour
The annual parade held to mark the queen’s birthday known as Trooping the Colour seems to be a particularly joyous occasion for both the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Cambridge. Since Catherine started attending the major event on the royal family’s calendar in 2011, she’s been photographed having sweet moments with Philip.
In 2012 they stood next to each other on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the event’s signature photo opp. With big smiles on their faces, Catherine and Philip looked out at the crowd.
Three years later in 2015, cameras captured another sweet moment between Philip and Catherine. Again on the balcony of the Buckingham Palace during the queen’s annual birthday festivities, the Duchess of Cambridge and Duke of Edinburgh shared a smile.
Yet again standing in the same place during the same event only this time in 2017, Catherine and Philip shared another sweet moment. On the balcony of Buckingham Palace with William and their kids, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, Catherine and Philip smiled at each other.
Even though the Duke of Edinburgh may have been wary about Catherine in the beginning, they’ve obviously become close.
