This is the Inappropriate Nickname Kate Middleton Used to Call Prince William
Many people have little nicknames for their significant other and so do the royals. Whether cute or odd, even Queen Elizabeth II isn’t above being called something other than her name by her husband, Prince Philip.
The Duke of Edinburgh calls Her Majesty “Cabbage.” And when it comes to the future king and his wife, Prince William and Kate Middleton have pet names for each other as well although theirs aren’t as innocent. Here is the risqué nickname the Duchess of Cambridge had for William when they were in college and what they call one another today.
What the duchess called the prince in college
Back when they attended St. Andrew’s University, Middleton reportedly had a cheeky name for her then-beau.
According to The Sun, she used to call the prince “Big Willy.” Yes, you read that correctly. But Middleton didn’t stick with that name. She changed it when William started losing his hair and began calling him “baldy.” Yep, you read that correctly too.
“The royals are not very good at communicating with one another so this is one way around it,” a Buckingham Palace insider said. “Nicknames are a way of taking the family tension out of things.”
The source added, “They can also be a rather childlike family. They love to play games and they give each other silly presents. I think it’s because they have to be so earnest in their public lives. Royals have always played in private. So William and Kate are really carrying on a long held tradition.”
What William used to call Middleton
William had a nickname for Middleton back when they were in college as well.
In 2006, five years before the pair tied the knot, William’s voicemail messages were hacked and transcripts revealed that he called his future wife “babykins.”
The Daily Mail noted that in those voicemails the prince said, “I’ve just picked up your message. Oh, my little babykins! I hope you are all right.”
The Sun reported the after they were married, William gave Middleton the jokey pet name “DoD” which stands for Duchess of Dolittle.
The nicknames they have for each other these days
More recently, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been heard calling each other more conservative pet names.
Attendants at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2016 said the royal couple called one another “babe” and “darling.”
Australian TV presenter and landscape gardener, Charlie Albone, told Grazia U.K. that when William asked Middleton about a plant she replied, “Babe, we’ve got those. We’ve got loads of those.”
Another one of the designers at the show, Margaret Knight, shared with Hello! that the prince stopped to look at poppies and asked the duchess, “Could you make one of these, darling?’”
