This Is the Real Reason Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Are Doing the Oprah Interview
Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex are ready to tell their side of the story. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from their roles as senior royals last year. Since then, they have not spoken at length about what caused them to make that drastic decision. Recently, they did an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey and held nothing back. So, why did the royal pair choose to do such an open interview?
Harry and Meghan left the royal family
In Jan. 2020, the couple announced their intention to carve a new path for themselves in order to become financially independent while still representing the queen. Unfortunately, the queen did not see a way for them to have hybrid roles and the Sussexes had to leave their positions as senior working royals altogether. In a recent interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Harry assured fans that he never walked away from the royal family and never intends to.
It was never walking away; it was stepping back rather than stepping down. You know, it was a really difficult environment, as I think a lot of people saw. We all know what the British press can be like, and it was destroying my mental health. I was like, this is toxic. So I did what any husband and what any father would do. It’s like, I need to get my family out of here. But we never walked away, and as far as I’m concerned, whatever decisions are made on that side, I will never walk away. I will always be contributing. My life is public service, so wherever I am in the world, it’s going to be the same thing.”

Since the royal couple got together, there have been rumors about them in several publications, and not all of them have been true.
In a preview for the interview, Oprah assured the audience that her talk with the Sussexes would be quite revealing.
“I just want to make it clear to everybody there is no subject that’s off-limits,” she says while talking to the couple. “Were you silent or were you silenced?”
According to sources close to the couple, Harry and Meghan did this interview to clear up some rumors that have been spread about them.
“Their intention is that after this interview people understand their reasons better,” the source told HollywoodLife. “The hope is that with their truth out there, in their own words, it will put a stop to all the false narratives.”
For the royal couple, Oprah was the perfect person to conduct the interview.
“They trust Oprah, that is the number one reason for sitting down with her. She is a dear friend so there is a genuine level of comfort there, it makes it easier to open up,” the source continued.
Oprah has been a longtime friend of the couple’s and even attended their 2018 wedding.
“What they went through that caused them to step down is incredibly personal, and not necessarily easy to talk about,” the source said. “So, having someone they know asking the questions makes all the difference.”
The interview will air Sunday Mar. 7 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
