‘This Is Us’ actor Milo Ventimiglia wasn’t supposed to have a mustache
Since its start, This Is Us has connected several characters throughout a lifetime. So, naturally, the characters age. Well, in order for the actors to show that their characters have aged, their appearances need to change. Mandy Moore wears special makeup that ages her when she plays Rebecca Pearson as a grandmother. Ventimiglia decided he’d find his own way of depicting an older Jack Pearson. He wanted a mustache.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the This Is Us actor reflected on why he wanted Jack to have facial hair.
“…But it was the ‘80s. I remember the second episode script read, ‘Jack walks into the kitchen as Rebecca packs the kids lunch. Eight years have gone by and he’s clean-shaven,'” said Ventimiglia. “I told Dan that if you shave my face clean, I’m not going to look eight years older. So, I fought for the mustache.”

Not everyone was initially sold on the idea of Jack having a mustache. This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman wanted to hear everyone else’s opinions at the studio before agreeing to the mustache.
“Dan went through the office asking, ‘Do you like him with it? Or, do you not?’ In a more explicit term,” said Ventimiglia.
Fogelman didn’t mince words.
“I asked, ‘Would you f*** this man with a mustache?'” said Fogelman.
Ventimiglia admitted that the studio was split.
“It was split, 50-50, right?” asked Ventimiglia to Fogelman. “It was not very encouraging!”
Despite the divided opinions of the studio, fans quickly fell for the This Is Us actor’s mustache.
“I think it’s worked out OK,” said Ventimiglia.
How will Jack Pearson’s facial hair evolve for the ‘This Is Us’ final season?
Fans first saw the This Is Us actor with a full, scruffy beard during the pilot episode. However, as time progressed on the show, Jack’s facial hair also evolved. When the Pearson kids were of elementary school age, Jack rocked an ’80s-inspired mustache. And fans were surprised by how much they liked the look.
Some fans even decided to grow their own mustaches in honor of This is Us actor Milo Ventimiglia.
After This Is Us Season 2 wrapped, Ventimiglia tossed aside the mustache in favor of a clean-shaven look. Fans can see a baby-faced Jack during the episodes that feature the early stages of Jack and Rebecca’s relationship. So, what will This Is Us Season 6 bring for Jack Pearson’s facial hair? We haven’t seen anything new yet, but there are still six more episodes left — plenty of time for a handlebar mustache or a thick pair of mutton chops.
