This Is Us has been building up to Kate and Toby’s heartbreaking split since the season 5 finale. Now the audience is closer than ever to finding out exactly what happens between the couple that causes them to divorce. And Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate in This Is Us, has a tease for fans regarding the mysterious Big Green Egg accident.

Kate and Toby’s marriage will fall apart on the day of an accident

As teased in This Is Us Season 6 Episode 3, Kate and Toby will decide to split following a Big Green Egg smoker accident that hurt their son Jack. It is his first memory, and it left a scar on his forehead. And during a flash-forward, Jack’s wife Lucy expressed concern over him using the smoker. She said, “You know, you don’t need to keep using that thing. It’s, like, the literal symbol of the day your mom and dad’s marriage blew up.”

And now, we know that the incident will take place at a party celebrating Rebecca and Miguel’s anniversary following the conclusion of the Big Three trilogy. So the clues are slowly being pieced together as This Is Us inches closer to Kate and Toby’s inevitable doom.

But how do Kate and Toby reach the point of no return? This Is Us Season 6 Episode 9, co-written by Chrissy Metz, gave fans insight into what goes wrong in their marriage. Toby wants to move to San Francisco, and Kate wants to stay in Los Angeles. Plus, Kate misses who Toby used to be. They are just growing apart, and the smoker incident seemingly puts the final nail in their coffin.

‘This Is Us’ star Chrissy Metz teases the impending incident

After the premiere of This Is Us Season 6 Episode 9, People spoke with Chrissy Metz about the hour and what’s next for Kate and Toby. They also asked the actor if she could tease how the Big Green Egg incident factors into Kate and Toby’s divorce.

“Well, there’s something aside from the Egg that occurs,” Metz revealed. “Let’s just say it is not a normal party. I don’t know if the Pearsons can have a normal party if I’m honest. S**t always seems to hit the fan with the parties. When three or more Pearsons are gathered, s**t hits the fan. I think it’s because there’s a lot going on under the surface — resentments and stuff that goes on.”

She continued, “There’s a particular incident that happens between Kate and Toby and Jack that really solidifies their decision of not moving forward.”

Going off of Chrissy Metz’s haunting tease, we’re confident fans are not ready to see the smoker accident play out in This Is Us.

Fortunately, there are happy times ahead for Chrissy Metz’s character in This Is Us.

Fans know that sometime after Kate and Toby separate, Kate finds love again with her boss, Phillip. The new couple will marry five years into the future, but first, Kate will prioritize her wants and needs. At the end of episode 9, she called Phillip to inform him that she wanted to be considered for a new position at the school.

“She’s ready to put herself first,” Metz explained to People. “If [Toby] gets to do what he wants to do, which means staying in San Francisco and having his own life, she wants to stay in LA and have the career that she’s always dreamt of. She’s very happy and so why can’t both exist? That’s the whole point is that they tried to let both exist, and it was just too difficult. So we’ll see.”
