One of the most profound relationships throughout the six seasons of NBC’s This Is Us was the love and friendship shared between Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia) and Miguel Rivas (Jon Huertas). This relationship continued as Miguel looked after Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and her children after Jack’s untimely death and into their later years as a married couple. However, the men had more than their love for Rebecca as a connection. This Is Us fans found some “eerie” similarities in the lives and deaths of the Pearson patriarch and his second-in-command too coincidental, not to mention.

Miguel and Jack had a memorable bromance

Jack and Miguel met during season 1 of This Is Us.

Jack needed to buy a suit for a country-club date with Rebecca and her parents. Luckily, Miguel was the salesperson on duty. After realizing Jack could not afford the garment, he lent it to his new friend to return when the evening was over.

Miguel also helped his friend recreate his and Rebecca’s disastrous first date on the eve of his proposal.

In the last two minutes of episode five, season 3, a flashback scene featured an unexpected conversation between Jack and Miguel. Jack asks Miguel if he’d look out for his family “if he were to get hit by a bus.”

Miguel smiles, nods, and accepts the responsibility.

The entire Jack-Miguel conversation was about life insurance of all things. The moment was even more ironic when Miguel joked that life insurance was a scam and that “Jack Pearson doesn’t die.”

‘This Is Us’ fans found ‘many similarities’ between Jack and Miguel’s lives and deaths

In a Reddit post titled “so many similarities,” a viewer made the following comparisons to the lives and deaths of best friends Jack and Miguel.

“The most significant moments in Miguel’s life were mirror shots. The episode showed his father’s letter, similar to Jack Pearson’s obituary letter. Both Jack and Miguel died due to heart failures,” revealed one Reddit user.

“A memorial tree for Jack and a tree for Miguel,” observed a second viewer.

“Jack died in 1998. Miguel died in 2028,” penned a third fan.

Fans connected the writer’s symbolic use of trees for both Miguel and Jack upon their deaths.

Miguel planted Rebecca an apple tree outside the Pearson family home upon their marriage.

The apple tree subsequently endured for many years.

Upon Miguel’s death, a devastated Rebecca sits in front of that same tree as Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Miguel’s kids spread his ashes.

After Jack’s death, Rebecca, Kevin, Kate, and Randall spread ashes around “Jack’s tree” and said their final goodbyes.

This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
