‘This Is Us’ Fans ‘Curious’ About Season 6’s ‘The Train’: ‘It’s Got to Be More Than Just Rebecca Dying’
The Big Three’s decision regarding their mother Rebecca Pearson’s (Mandy Moore) care was made on This Is Us. Therefore, the wheels are set in motion for the two special, final, and heartbreaking episodes of the NBC family drama. Fan speculation has run the gamut on what stories they’d like to see wrapped up as the series ends. However, in particular, one episode has viewers more “curious” than any other. Some fans are hopeful that the second to the last episode titled “The Train” has “got to be more than just Rebecca dying.”
Did Sterling K. Brown tease the ‘payoff’ episode in January 2022?
Ahead of This Is Us‘ season 6 premiere, Sterling K. Brown, who plays Randall Pearson, may have teased the title of the second to the last episode, “The Train.”
As season 5 concluded, Rebecca asked Kevin (Justin Hartley) to build the cabin her late husband Jack always promised he would construct for her.
The family’s original cabin held many happy memories. In that location Rebecca wanted to live out the remainder of her life.
Brown in a January 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly “there is a decision as to who’s going to be responsible for mom, and everybody reacts to her decision differently.”
“I think it’ll also be lyrical,” the actor said.
“You’ll see what I mean. The train tracks will be laid in the premiere. And there will be a payoff.”

In a Reddit thread titled “I’m curious about the second to last episode,” fans discussed the future of the Pearson clan.
They are hopeful that the penultimate episode will contain more information than just the clan reacting to Rebecca’s death.
“It’s the one that Mandy threw up over, and I heard Chrissy [Metz] hyperventilated after they saw the script. I’m curious what happens in it. It has to be more than just Rebecca dying because we all know that’s coming,” the original poster wrote.
“I really do think that episode will be Rebecca’s death and the last episode will be how everyone goes on,” a second fan penned. “I can’t imagine it was very easy for an actor to act out their own death scene, especially in such a believable, common way. After six years of living with this character. I think that’s why she threw up. I can’t imagine how devastating that is for an actor.”
“The Rebecca death episode is likely to be the most gut wrenching hour of the entire series,” noted a third Reddit user.
“Well, the episode before it could hypothetically be worse. Rebecca panicky without Miguel, Rebecca scared of her children because she doesn’t recognize them, Rebecca upset about something no one understands, Rebecca losing the ability to speak or understand what people are saying,” theorized a fourth fan.

There are two episodes that remain of the NBC family drama.
“The Train” is the second to last episode.
The finale of the series is simply titled “Us” and will air on May 24.
