Fans reacted on social media to the episode. Many said they were “in tears” over just how necessary Randall and Rebecca were to each other.

Randall was always there for Rebecca

The unexpected trip, taken on the heels of the Pearson family Thanksgiving, allowed mother and son to reminisce and process the emotions related to Rebecca’s advice to her children Randall, Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Kevin (Justin Hartley), as well as her advancing Alzheimer’s Disease.

During Pearson pool day, Randall aced his swim test. However, his accomplishments were overshadowed by his brother and sister’s struggles. Realizing Rebecca wanted the family to swim together that summer at the pool, Randall coerced his siblings into the pool and gave his mother what she wanted.

Later Randall talked to a police officer and managed to get the siblings out of trouble when the officer caught them trespassing at the same pool in their early 20s. He told the officer that the family had lost their patriarch, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and that he was unsure of how Rebecca would react if she had to bail her three children out of jail.

Finally, Randall protected Rebecca upon learning of her disease and taking the steps necessary to get a correct diagnosis and treatment to try and prolong her quality of life as much as possible.

This Is Us subsequently looked back on how Rebecca was always there for Randall. She helped him achieve his goal of summer reading. Together they would sit on a sofa and read while his siblings and father watched television. They would spend a day at the library, with a treat of smiley face cookies at the end of the day. Rebecca also shared her pride in Randall’s current political achievements, drinking his favorite wine and reading his favorite book, as noted in an interview he did in a magazine.
