‘This Is Us’ Finale Deleted Scene Dan Fogelman Plans to Release Some Day
After the This Is Us finale, viewers have seen every moment of the Pearson family. Or, have they? Creator Dan Fogelman revealed in a recent interview he cut one scene out of the This Is Us finale. While he offered no time frame, Fogelman said he may release the This Is Us deleted scenes at some point.
Fogelman spoke with Deadline in an interview published May 24, once the This Is Us finale aired. Here’s what you didn’t see in the This Is Us finale, and what you might still see one day.
There was more with the kids in the ‘This Is Us’ finale
The This Is Us finale focused on two periods in the Pearson family’s lives. Sometime in the future, Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kevin (Justin Hartley), and Kate (Chrissy Metz) are giving eulogies at Rebecca (Mandy Moore)’s funeral. When they were kids, Rebecca and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) entertain the Big Three on a lazy Sunday.
“Towards the opening of the finale, you see the three little kids waking up, intercut with the three adult kids waking up on the morning of their mother’s funeral,” Fogelman told Deadline. “And then Jack’s voice calls them downstairs for breakfast.”
‘This Is Us’ deleted scenes are 3 years old
This Is Us filmed those scenes with the kids three years ago, while they were still young. By the time Fogelman and the editors edited the This Is Us finale, they had more footage than could fit in the episode. Here’s his description of the scene that didn’t make the cut.
“I recorded stuff that we barely scripted, Jack’s flipping pancakes and making pancakes and then intercut with Randall, his much younger family in the old house flipping pancakes and making pancakes,” Fogelman said. “It was so charming, and it was speaking to the theme at the end of the episode — which is what the entire series has been about — that you carry this stuff forward with you without even thinking about it.”
Why the pancake scene didn’t make the cut
Ultimately, the pancake scene strayed too far from the This Is Us finale. Fogelman liked it though, so he’s happy to talk about it and plans to show This Is Us fans one day.
“But it was a little bit abstract,” Fogelman said. “The kids were younger, you were in a different timeline with Randall and as cute as it was, I thought we spoke to it better at the end of the episode, and so I didn’t keep it but I was so charming and the kids are so young. and I think I’m going to put it online at some point.”
