‘This Is Us’: Will Kate and Toby End Up Together? Chris Sullivan Teases the Couple’s Future
As This Is Us Season 5 delves deeper into Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) past, fans are becoming increasingly curious about her future with Toby (Chris Sullivan). The couple faced their fair share of conflict — with plenty more on the way. So naturally, viewers are wondering whether Kate and Toby end up together by the This Is Us series finale. Here’s what we know so far.
What happened to Kate and Toby in ‘This Is Us’ Season 5?
This Is Us has yet to uncover major details about Kate and Toby’s future. Within the past few seasons, the NBC family drama merely teased what’s to come. For instance, Toby appeared in multiple flash-forward scenes alongside the Pearsons. However, the character was spotted without his wedding ring. Meanwhile, Kate has never been seen in the far-future.
That said, it’s clear Kate and Toby’s legacy continues on This Is Us. In the fifth season finale, the pair decided to adopt another child after baby Jack. Then in a deep future flash-forward, adult Jack Damon (Blake Stadnik) and his wife, Lucy (Auden Thornton), welcomed a baby girl named Hope. Jack’s sister, Hailey (Adelaide Kane), also showed up at the birth, suggesting Kate and Toby’s adoption was successful.
Chris Sullivan answers whether Kate and Toby will get a happy ending on ‘This Is Us’
Now, Kate and Toby are going through the adoption process on This Is Us Season 5. And as with most couples on the NBC drama, they will be put to the test. But could the challenges ahead be too much for Kate and Toby’s relationship to survive long-term?
In December 2020, Sullivan stopped by The Talk and answered whether he was worried Kate and Toby wouldn’t get their happy ending on This Is Us. Of course, the actor didn’t give away any major details. However, he hinted Kate and Toby will always support each other, even if they don’t end up together.
“Happily ever after can mean so many different things,” Sullivan said. “I don’t know if it always means that people end up together. I don’t know if it always means that there’s this fairy tale ending.”
He continued, “Obviously, every couple in This Is Us is challenged week after week thanks to our writers. But I think they’re going to get through whatever they face with love and compassion for each other, always turning back toward one another.”
Meanwhile, when speaking with Awards Daily in July 2020, Sullivan revealed he doesn’t know anything about Kate and Toby’s far future. The actor also hinted fans may find out soon.
“Pretty soon we’re going to have to figure out the mystery of why Toby and Kate aren’t arriving together in those flashforwards and what’s going on there,” Sullivan said at the time. “I don’t actually know what the answer to that is. I’m looking forward to that like everyone else.”
But whatever happens next, it’s clear Sullivan is confident the This Is Us writers will give Kate and Toby a satisfying ending.
“I feel taken care of by the writers,” Sullivan told Entertainment Weekly in October. “They’re not going to force these characters into any kind of salacious scenario for the sake of drama. These are well-lived, well-written characters who are headed exactly where they’re supposed to be.”
