‘This Is Us’: Does Kevin Marry Madison in the Future?
[Spoiler alert: This Is Us Season 4, Episode 18.] The This Is Us Season 4 finale revealed Madison (Caitlin Thompson) is the mother of Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) children in the future. But even so, this doesn’t necessarily mean the pair end up together. As any fan will tell you, the NBC series has plenty of storylines it has yet to explore — including co-parenting. So does Kevin marry Madison on This Is Us? It appears we’re finally getting some answers in the fifth season.
What happened to Madison and Kevin in the ‘This Is Us’ Season 4 finale?
In the second half of the This Is Us Season 4 finale, Madison visits her OB-GYN, Dr. Eli Mason (Josh Hamilton), and opens up about her pregnancy. She breaks down and admits her surprise. Because of her bulemia, she was told she may never have children. Madison then shares she hasn’t been able to tell anyone about the pregnancy, not even the father.
Ultimately, Madison is afraid to tell Kevin because he comes from a “long line of great love stories.” She thinks an unplanned pregnancy isn’t what he would want. Dr. Mason tells Madison to give the father of her baby a chance — and she does.
Later, Madison arrives at Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) house for baby Jack’s birthday. Unknown to Madison, Kevin and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) are in the middle of an argument. So when she interrupts the fight and tells Kevin they need to talk, the actor almost brushes her off. Then Madison just says it — she’s pregnant.
Kevin is in shock and remains silent. Madison understands the situation. She doesn’t know much about Kevin other than his undying love for Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge). But Madison says wants to keep the baby as it’s a “medical miracle” for her. She also makes it clear she doesn’t need anything from Kevin, emotionally or financially.
“You can still find the great love story you deserve,” Madison says.
In response, Kevin gets some air and also runs into Randall for part two of their fight. Randall says Kevin doesn’t understand what it’s like to care for others, among other things that both parties will probably regret in This Is Us Season 5. But regardless, Kevin returns to Madison and tells her he’s all in.
“Whatever you need, I’m all in,” Kevin says. “I want this … I want to be a father, I think I’d be great at it. The love of my life will be my child.”
Madison corrects him — she’s having twins. Then in a flash-forward, an aged Kevin is seen with his two children. He’s also wearing a wedding band, presumably meaning he’s married in the future. But will Kevin and Madison get married? At the end of the episode, clips of Kevin’s other love interests — Sophie and Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison) — jump by. So it’s still up in the air at this point.
Will Kevin and Madison get married in ‘This Is Us’?
When the This Is Us Season 4 fall finale aired in November 2019, fans learned Kevin has a pregnant fiancée by his 40th birthday. Of course, now we know Madison is pregnant with Kevin’s twins. However, the mystery woman is still unconfirmed, according to creator Dan Fogelman in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“There’s an immediate answer coming to all of that,” Fogelman said when asked about Kevin’s pregnant fiancée. “But I think that there’s basically many more chapters in Kevin’s romantic story.”
He added: “We are far advanced already. I’ve already written the season premiere of next year and broken, I think, five episodes of the season. And we have mapped out plans for the entire next and sixth season honestly. So Kevin has a journey ahead of him, and I don’t want to get too far ahead of it just yet.”
Meanwhile, Hartley revealed This Is Us fans should keep their minds open when it comes to Kevin’s future wife.
“I think it’s safe to assume that the flashes that you saw of the women, could or could not be. Or it could be someone completely different,” Hartley told The Wrap. “And is it safe to assume the woman he is married to is not the mother of his children? I think it’s safe to have that question, but not to assume it.”
Nevertheless, Madison is still a strong contender. Still speaking with The Wrap, Hartley shared his thoughts on Kevin’s relationship with Madison moving forward now that the couple is expecting twins.
“I think he’s gonna really invest in the entire thing and try to get to know her,” Hartley said. “Knowing Kevin, I think he’ll probably try to do everything he can to fall in love with her and have a family with her.”
Hartley also believes Madison and Kevin could have a great love story on This Is Us. He told Glamour:
I think sometimes the nontraditional and the unexpected relationships develop out of something that you in a million years would never guess that Person A would be with Person B. But, because of certain circumstances, they do. These two people find themselves together, and for whatever reason this person changed what they thought their life was going to be like and what they thought they wanted in their life. And the other person accepted a few things they thought they would never deal with. The next thing you know you have a kind of perfect relationship that is so strange when on paper. But it works in reality.
At this point, it’s impossible to tell whether or not Kevin marries Madison on This Is Us. Even if he’s “all in” with Madison right now, the NBC drama still chose to highlight Cassidy and Sophie. So who knows what will happen when the show returns for its fifth season. But regardless, we hope it’ll be a really great love story — one for the ages.
