This Is Us Season 5, is finally slated to begin soon and this season we will be narrowing in on Rebecca (Mandy Moore), the Pearson family matriarch. The acclaimed drama series follows the Big Three — triplets, Kate (Chrissy Metz), Kevin (Justin Hartley), and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) in the past and the present as well as their parents, Rebecca and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia).

However, this season will zero in on Rebecca, and Moore has explained we’re in for some surprises.

Inside ‘This Is Us’ Season 5

Season 5 of This Is Us will finally debut on Oct. 27 after a longer-than-usual hiatus following the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It’s set to debut amid the Big Three’s 40th birthday and some stunning revelations will be revealed.

Set just a few months after the Season 4 finale, the series creator Dan Fogelman explained that Randall and Kevin still aren’t on good terms. “This isn’t the type of fight that you clap your hands and say, ‘Well, that was a weird one’ and come back from it immediately,” Fogelman explained to TV Insider. “It will take a lot to recover.”

However, Fogelman did reveal that we will see Kate’s reaction to Kevin and Madison’s (Caitlin Thompson) pregnancy news and we will discover what happens with Rebecca’s clinical trial in St. Louis as she begins treating her Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

This what happened to Rebecca in Season 4 of ‘This Is Us’

Season 4 of This is Us was heavy for all of the Pearsons, but especially for Rebecca. It has been confirmed that Rebecca is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. We saw her decide to live her life on her own terms, only to be guilt-tripped into participating in an experimental study at a St. Louis University by Randall.

It is something that has put Kevin and Randall at war with each other. Moore chatted with Entertainment Weekly about her character, Randall and Kevin. She said,

I can absolutely understand a son who lost his biological father, his adopted father, and now has the opportunity to do whatever it takes to care for his mom,” says Moore. “I don’t know if I necessarily agree with the means by which he got Rebecca to agree to this. But I could also understand, this is a woman who is fully understanding of the resources that are out there and has made this decision with a lot of information at her fingertips that instead of pressing forward and being a part of some sort of clinical trial or really doing anything that feels like too much, she really wants to spend this time with her family.

Fogelman is also going to give us a deep dive into Rebecca’s relationship with Miguel (Jon Huertas). This is something audiences have been waiting for seasons. “We have a big storyline planned for Mandy in the next upcoming season in present-day as an older woman and also her past timelines,” he said. “That will include a deeper look into Rebecca and Miguel’s relationship throughout the decades.”

Moore expressed how she feels the audience will interpret Season 5. She explained,

In typical This Is Us fashion, there are going to be things that are shocking, and some surprises that aren’t as much of a surprise to people”Obviously there’s an intention of revealing things slowly and peeling back the layers of the onion, but I know there’s never an intention to misdirect people. It’s just like: Have you really been paying attention? Or: You just don’t know the fuller picture yet. We’re just super-zoomed-in and looking at something on a micro level. And as we start to look at the macro picture of things, things get revealed. There’s a couple of things that I think people are going to be like, “Oh! Oh — oh. I didn’t see that coming.
