During This Is Us Season 6 Episode 15, Miguel (Jon Huertas) and Rebecca’s love story is explored from Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) forcing them to become friends to him caring for her until his death.
A few days after the premiere, Mandy Moore, who portrays Rebecca in the NBC drama, uploaded still photos from the episode to her Instagram, declaring herself “Team Miguel” and “Team Jon Huertas” for life.
She chose a picture of the two from the episode eating breakfast together, two of him escorting her on his arm, and a final one of him kissing her on the forehead as he tucked her into bed. Huertas replied, “you fill my heart!”
The official Instagram account for This Is Us also commented, “he made a vow and kept it,” with the crying and red heart emojis, referring to Miguel’s response to the Big Three when they brought up hiring a full-time nurse.
Miguel died in ‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 15
This Is Us Season 6 Episode 15 dove into Miguel’s story that began in Puerto Rico when his father relocated his family to Pennsylvania to follow a better job. Miguel later got into construction and met Jack but didn’t get along with his then-girlfriend Rebecca at the time.
Therefore, he left the two alone in a bar, hoping they would become friends and unknowingly sparking their eventual love story. After a failed marriage, Miguel attempted to care for the Pearsons before moving to Houston to reunite with his son.
Following those unanswered efforts, he returned to Pennsylvania and reconnected with Rebecca after Tess’s birth, eventually beginning a romance.
Although it took time, the Big Three accepted the relationship, and their stepfather and he became a staple in their lives. At Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) second wedding, it became clear Miguel’s health started declining while he cared for Rebecca as he began taking heart medication.
Jon Huertas admits he’s glad ‘This Is Us’ didn’t show Miguel’s death
He continued to deteriorate after chasing his wife into the snow and falling. Therefore, Kevin (Justin Hartley) reunited Miguel and his oldest son, who spent his last years with him.
Miguel’s death isn’t shown but understood as the family gathered around the tree he planted for Rebecca to spread his ashes. Additionally, they returned to his hometown to sprinkle the rest of the ashes at the baseball field he used to play as a child.
Following the episode premiere, Huertas admitted to Variety that he’s glad the creators didn’t show Miguel’s death, deeming it unnecessary. “I feel like when someone dies, even if it’s a thriller or a horror film, what’s more interesting to me are people’s reactions than actually seeing the person perish,” he explained.
The actor also pointed out that the emotional foundation of the series makes it more interesting to see the others’ reactions to Miguel’s death as opposed to showing the character “take his last breath.” This Is Us airs Tuesdays on NBC.
