‘This Is Us’ Season 4 Finale: Chrissy Metz Was a ‘Mess’ After Reading the Script for the Last Episode
There’s a reason why This Is Us fans simultaneously love and dread season finales. Typically, the last episode answers burning questions viewers have been asking for all season long. But with that comes another set of questions to obsess over before the next season premiere. Now as the This Is Us Season 4 finale approaches on March 24, everyone is bracing themselves for what’s to come. And not to derail anyone’s progress, but Chrissy Metz — who plays Kate Pearson — recently said she was a “mess” after reading the script for “Strangers: Part Two” written by creator Dan Fogelman.
Chrissy Metz teases the ‘This Is Us’ Season 4 finale
In an interview with People released on March 18, Metz opened up about the This Is Us Season 4 finale. And basically, her remarks showed us that we are vastly underprepared for what’s going to happen.
Metz confirmed Fogelman wrote the final episode of the fourth season. According to IMDb, the creator also wrote the This Is Us Season 4 premiere, titled “Strangers.” So seeing as the finale is called “Strangers: Part Two,” it was only fitting.
Regardless, Metz revealed her thoughts on the March 24 episode when Fogelman sent over the script — redacted scenes and all.
“Dan sent it to us, I texted him immediately, and there were some redacted scenes that were secret scenes,” Metz said. “I was like, ‘Wait. What’s going on?’ He sent me the redacted scenes, and I was like, ‘Oh!’ I mean, I was a mess.”
Now it seems redacted scenes are common practice for the This Is Us team when there’s a big episode to draw up more excitement. “There’s a lot of redacted scenes,” Sterling K. Brown — who plays Randall Pearson — previously told the Los Angeles Times. “It happens probably three or four times a season … The writers do a really good job at keeping us in a state of eager anticipation. There is something coming up that I wish I could talk about.”
So Metz’s reaction to the This Is Us Season 4 finale shows us those scenes are probably a big deal. “There’s a lot to unpack,” Metz told People. “It’s going to be a doozy of a finale.”
The ‘This Is Us’ team tell fans what they need to know about the fourth season finale
Following “After the Fire” on March 17, This Is Us executive producers Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker teased what happens in the season 4 finale.
“It’s baby Jack’s first birthday, and everybody is descending on L.A. for what’s hopefully a happy celebration,” Aptaker told Entertainment Weekly. “But given that it’s our season finale and our family, there will probably be some hiccups along the way.”
Meanwhile, when speaking with Glamour, Berger shared Fogelman’s episode is “really beautiful” and the actors do the script justice. “We can’t wait for everyone to see it,” Berger added. “It’s a very exciting episode of TV.”
Then Aptaker hinted we’ll get some answers about Randall and Kevin (Justin Hartley) in the This Is Us Season 4 finale. But as expected, it leads into what’s to come in the fifth season. The executive producer said:
I think people will have a lot of the answers they’ve been wondering about [regarding] what’s going on between the brothers. It really queues us up for our return, which is going to be that 40th birthday episode. And of course, as our finales always do, we’ll throw in a few curve balls that people could never see coming unless they’ve been hiding under our writers room conference table.
Meanwhile, Milo Ventimiglia — who plays Jack Pearson — warned fans about the last episode of season 4. “I don’t know if there’s a word so much as just get ready. Just get ready,” the actor told People of the finale. “It’s heavy, it’s beautiful and it’s really incredible.”
This Is Us Season 4 airs its grand finale on Tuesday, March 24 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
