‘This Is Us’: How Fans Think Season 5 Will Prove Kate Isn’t Dead
With every new episode of This Is Us, fans grow increasingly worried about Kate Pearson’s (Chrissy Metz) future. For the most part, viewers believe Kate is either dead or headed toward divorce. But some individuals still have hope for the character’s happiness on the NBC drama. Then recently, a fan theorized how This Is Us Season 5 could prove Kate is still alive in the flash-forward involving Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) death bed. And yes, it involves a full-circle moment.
Why ‘This Is Us’ fans think Kate will die
This Is Us fans think Kate died because she hasn’t been seen in any of the flash-forward scenes. As of the fourth season finale, both Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin (Justin Hartley) have appeared in the future beside their dying mother.
Meanwhile, Toby (Chris Sullivan) has indicated something happened with his relationship with Kate. In the flash-forwards from This Is Us Season 3, Toby hesitated to go to the Pearson family gathering. However, the character went after Randall told him “she” would want him there. Toby also wasn’t wearing his wedding ring at the time. Then when he arrived, he said his son, Jack, was on his way with someone else. However, it was unclear whether or not this included Kate.
‘This Is Us’ fans theorize Kate will be shown alive in the future during the season 5 finale
In a thread on Reddit, one fan theorized This Is Us won’t kill off Kate. They also predicted the NBC drama will try to parallel Randall and Kevin’s entrances in the fifth season finale.
“The show love its full circle moments and they also like to highlight patterns/repetitive moments within life,” the fan wrote. “The reason I say Kate is alive is because I think with 99% certainty that she is entering Rebecca’s death bed room at the Season 5 finale.”
They continued, “Season 3 finale (Her): Randall enters the room -Season 4 finale (Strangers pt. 2): Kevin enters the room. We may see future kate entering Kevin’s house before the season 5 finale but I think there’s no way that the writers pass up on this symbolic thread/imagery.”
Naturally, fans added to the This Is Us theory. Some agreed and wondered whether the series hasn’t shown Kate in the future because her storyline involves her weight. Meanwhile, others disagreed and continued to believe Kate dies in the future.
Then another fan pointed out it’s possible This Is Us will focus on Kate in season 5, as the previous two seasons developed the character’s brothers before they appeared in front of Rebecca in the future.
“They have been picking one of the ‘Big Three’ to show a lot of character development in each season, and this next season will be Kate’s,” the fan wrote. “Each season shows their character go through major hurdles (i.e. Randall with William and Kevin with Uncle Nicky/drinking) and at the end that character enters the room.”
What to expect from Kate in ‘This Is Us’ Season 5
Now, it seems likely This Is Us Season 5 will focus on Kate’s story. In the fourth season finale, viewers discovered Toby and Kate adopted a child named Hailey, played by Adelaide Kane in the future. Then in an interview with People, Metz revealed her character will deal with an important storyline in the upcoming season.
“There is a story, a through-line, coming down the pike about some experiences that shaped Kate as a woman — as an adult — that we haven’t seen yet,” Metz said. “I remember Dan giving me a call and he’s like, ‘How do you feel about this? Are you going to be able to tackle this? How are you going to feel about it?’ And I’m like, ‘No let’s do it, I think it’s super important.’”
The actor then shared This Is Us fans currently have no idea what Kate went through. She also hinted the storyline will be traumatic. Then when speaking with Stylecaster, Metz shared the arc goes beyond Kate’s guilt over Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) death.
“I think that Kate is holding onto a lot of trauma she has yet to share with people and that she’s been burying and burying for the majority of her life,” Metz said.
But even so, Metz is still holding onto hope for Kate in This Is Us Season 5. “I hope she has some more healing, and I do think she’s going to,” she said.
