‘This Is Us’ Season 5: Chrissy Metz Hints Kate and Toby’s Relationship Could Be in Trouble
At the start of This Is Us Season 5, Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) seemed stronger than ever. But recently, Metz hinted Kate’s secret could put a wedge between the couple. Here’s what the actor said and what to expect moving forward.
Kate tells Toby about her abortion in ‘This Is Us’ Season 5
In This Is Us Season 5, viewers learned that teen Kate (Hannah Zeile) got pregnant with her abusive ex-boyfriend, Marc (Austin Abrams). Then in the fifth episode titled “A Long Road Home,” Kate told Toby she had an abortion.
At first, Toby didn’t know why Kate kept the abortion and pregnancy a secret for so long, especially because it took them two years to have baby Jack. But, Kate revealed this was something she dealt with alone from the very beginning. She didn’t even tell Rebecca (Mandy Moore), Randall (Sterling K. Brown), or Kevin (Justin Hartley).
“I was 18-years-old. That decision was wrapped up in the darkest, lowest, most painful time of my life. It was the most painful relationship of my life,” Kate said. “All I wanted to do, I wanted to lock it up. I didn’t want to think about it, I didn’t want to think about him. He was so cruel to me.”
In the end, Toby was understanding of the situation. He supported Kate and accompanied her to confront Marc once and for all.
Chrissy Metz answers what’s next for Kate and Toby
Following This Is Us Season 5 Episode 5, Metz revealed Kate’s cathartic moment with Toby and her confrontation with Marc was a “turning point” for her character. The actor told Us Weekly:
These are things that she’s literally carried around for years — secrets, guilt, shame, sadness and sorrow — that she has never been able to really process. I don’t think she was strong enough to process it. Now that she is … unconditionally loved and she is doing the things that she never thought she’d ever do, like being a mother and being a loving relationship, now I think she has the strength to say, “OK. This is a turning point for me.”
Nevertheless, it seems the chapter isn’t completely closed. Metz suggested Toby is still upset about Kate’s secret.
“When you trust [someone] and you have been in their lives for a certain amount of time, you think you know what they’ve been through,” Metz said. “I would imagine that it’s going to be brought up more [in the future].”
Meanwhile, when speaking with NBC New York in January 2020, Metz hinted that Toby will continue to question Kate, which could push the couple apart in This Is Us Season 5.
“As much as Toby wants to be there for her, I think he’s gonna question why she never said anything,” Metz said. “I hope he can understand. But, who knows if this will drive a wedge between them.”
For now, This Is Us fans will just have to wait and see what happens to Kate and Toby in season 5. But, whatever comes next, we know it’s going to be emotional. So stay tuned.
This Is Us Season 5 airs Tuesday nights on NBC.
