‘This Is Us’ Season 5: Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Justin Hartley Reunite and They’re ‘Better Than Ever’
It’s been an exciting week for This Is Us fans. Not only did the cast and crew return to work on season 5, but NBC also announced the new season will arrive two weeks early. Now, Sterling K. Brown (Randall), Chrissy Metz (Kate), and Justin Hartley (Kevin) have reunited. So The Big Three is officially back for This Is Us Season 5.
The ‘This Is Us’ cast and crew start production on season 5
Creator Dan Fogelman confirmed This Is Us Season 5 started filming on Thursday, Sept. 24. He posted a photo of Mandy Moore (Rebecca) and Milo Ventimiglia (Jack). The actors practiced social distancing while wearing masks.
“A 2020 television sex scene,” Fogelman captioned the photo on Twitter. “We’re back.”
Meanwhile, Moore opened up about going back to work on her Instagram Story. She revealed she was “grateful” and “excited” about her first day. Brown also shared a few behind-the-scenes photos on his social media accounts.

While This Is Us Season 5 started production on Sept. 24, fans haven’t seen all three actors behind Kate, Kevin, and Randall — until now. On Sept. 28, Metz told her Instagram followers she would return to the This Is Us set the next day. This also happened to be her 40th birthday. Then on the 29th, Brown shared a sweet selfie alongside Metz and Hartley.
“The Big 3 is back and better than ever,” Brown captioned the picture. “And happy birthday to my sis, @ChrissyMetz!!! #ThisIsUs”
Meanwhile, Moore and Susan Kelechi Watson (Beth) celebrated Metz’s birthday on social media. Watson shared a series of photos on her Instagram Story. Then Moore published a lengthy post.
“Happy Birthday, @chrissymetz,” Moore wrote. “To know you is to love you. You are an absolute beam of light in this world and I’m so grateful that the #thisisus journey brought us into one another’s orbit.”
She continued, “Watching the world collectively fall in love with all that you are (singer-songwriter, author, podcast host, etc…) over these last few years has been such an immense joy. I can’t wait to see what you do with this next chapter in life. Love you, Mitzy!! Can’t wait to social-distance squeeze you soon!!”
What happened to Randall, Kate, and Kevin before ‘This Is Us’ Season 5?
As the This Is Us team begins production on season 5, fans are excited to see everyone’s hard work come to life on Tuesday, Oct. 27. But even so, there’s a lot of drama on the horizon for The Big Three.
New seasons of This Is Us typically start with Kevin, Randall, and Kate’s birthday. But in the season 4 fall finale, viewers saw a flash-forward of The Big Three’s 40th celebration, and the family was broken. Randall and Kevin weren’t speaking, which was a result of their big fight. So it’s likely the season 5 premiere will pick up here.
Meanwhile, each Pearson sibling was dealing with a challenge of their own in the This Is Us Season 4 finale. Randall started to address his mental health. Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan) decided to adopt a child. Then Kate’s best friend, Madison (Caitlin Thompson), revealed she was pregnant with Kevin’s twins.
Whatever happens to Kate, Kevin, and Randall when This Is Us returns for its two-hour season 5 premiere, it’s going to be big. So stay tuned.
