‘This Is Us’ Season 6: Alexandra Breckenridge Teases a Major Sophie and Kevin Theory
This Is Us Season 6 will be the final chapter of the Pearsons’ journey, and many fans are hoping to see how Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) love story ends. But does the character’s future have anything to do with his ex-wife, Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge)? Recently, Breckenridge seemingly teased a major Sophie and Kevin theory for This Is Us Season 6 — here’s what the actor said and what to expect next.
What happened to Sophie and Kevin in ‘This Is Us’ Season 5?
Sophie and Kevin’s relationship wasn’t exactly at the center of This Is Us Season 5. But the couple’s first and only interaction made Kevin rethink his future.
Throughout the season, Kevin and Madison (Caitlin Thompson) navigated their new romance and the birth of their twins, Nicholas and Frances. The two characters planned to get married and start a family together. But then Sophie called Kevin before his bachelor party.
On the surface, Kevin and Sophie’s conversation wasn’t out of the ordinary. Sophie briefly congratulated him. However, Kevin’s chat with his ex-wife, coupled with his discussion with his ex-girlfriend, Zoe (Melanie Liburd), seemed to make him question his relationship with Madison. Then many fans wondered whether he was getting married out of obligation instead of love.
Nevertheless, Kevin ended up deleting Sophie’s number. But This Is Us also left Sophie’s storyline open, as she suddenly changed her number and didn’t explain why. Then in the season 5 finale, Kevin and Madison canceled their wedding when Madison realized her fiancé wasn’t in love with her.
Alexandra Breckenridge on Sophie’s return in ‘This Is Us’ Season 6
Now, Kevin is single going into This Is Us Season 6, but is the door still open for Sophie? Fans will just have to wait and see. But the couple’s last interaction in season 4 might have hinted when Kevin and Sophie will meet again.
As you may remember, Sophie’s mom died in This Is Us Season 4, and Kevin reunited with his ex. Before saying goodbye, Kevin said, “I’ll see you next time someone dies.”
At the time, the comment had some This Is Us fans theorizing Sophie will return in the future timeline where Rebecca (Mandy Moore) is seemingly on her deathbed. Then Breckenridge teased a similar theory ahead of This Is Us Season 6.
When speaking with Us Weekly in June 2021, the actor revealed she already filmed a This Is Us scene wearing old makeup. She also shared her own prediction about Sophie’s future. Breckenridge said:
I did do a scene where they did old makeup, but I don’t think it made it to the show. … Every time they’ve asked me to come back in the past, I’m like, I hope that I’m in the house at the end of the show and you see me in, like, old makeup and everybody’s like, “What? Oh, my gosh!” And you’re not sure if she’s just there because their mom is in hospice or if they’re together. I really hope that happens.
Will Sophie and Kevin end up together in ‘This Is Us’ Season 6?
This Is Us fans will have to watch how Kevin and Sophie’s story unfolds in season 6. But at least it seems Breckenridge is willing to come back to film more scenes, schedule permitting.
“The reality is that I shoot Virgin River in Canada at the exact same time that they shoot This Is Us in LA,” Breckenridge told Us Weekly. “I think they’ve been really hoping that it would work out maybe in the future. So we’ll see.”
She added, “Maybe I’ll be able to come back either in a love interest capacity or in an old friend capacity.”
Meanwhile, creator Dan Fogelman told Deadline This Is Us Season 6 will revisit the women from Kevin’s past. But no matter what happens, it seems likely the character’s final chapter will be “satisfying.” Fogelman said:
I think Kevin’s journey is one of, he’s a little slower than a lot of us, and he’s certainly fallen more than he’s stood when it comes to romantic relationships—and not from a lack of attributes. He’s certainly the most charming, handsome guy in the world; it’s not hard for him to land a woman. But I think, hopefully, when we get to the end of his romantic journey, it will be satisfying. It won’t necessarily be one that everybody was rooting for, or it might be one that some were rooting for. It might catch people by surprise, but hopefully, it’ll at least feel true to his character.
This Is Us will return for season 6 on NBC.
