‘This Is Us’ Season 6: Chrissy Metz and Chris Sullivan Dread Thinking About Kate and Toby’s Divorce, ‘We Definitely Both Try to Avoid It’
It’s inevitable, This Is Us fans — Kate and Toby will divorce sometime in season 6. Now, all anyone can do is prepare for the heartbreaking moment the two characters decide to part ways after many years together. However, Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate, has admitted that she and Chris Sullivan, who plays Toby, have tried their best to avoid the sad reality at all costs.
The ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 finale revealed Kate and Toby will separate in the future
Kate and Toby have had their fair share of ups and downs over the course of the past five seasons of This Is Us. However, the couple always seemed to make their marriage work. But it looks like their good luck is not going to last forever. At the end of the This Is Us Season 5 finale, the show jumped five years into the future to Kate and Phillip’s wedding day.
Kate and Phillip didn’t exactly have the cutest meeting. He plays her boss at the music school, and he made it very clear that she was underqualified for her position on her first day. However, Phillip eventually realized that Kate was a great teacher and welcomed her. He even convinced her to keep her job at the school in the season 5 finale. But fans never expected Kate and Phillip’s relationship to turn romantic until the reveal at the end of the fifth season.
Unfortunately, Kate getting remarried obviously does not bode well for her relationship with Toby in This Is Us Season 6. At some point in the final episodes, the couple will decide to divorce. And it’s only a matter of time before the heartbreak begins.
Chrissy Metz reveals that she and Chris Sullivan don’t like to think about their characters divorcing
Before This Is Us Season 6 premiered, Chrissy Metz talked with Entertainment Weekly about the final season. She also shared how she and Chris Sullivan feel about Kate and Toby’s impending separation.
“It makes us very sad,” Metz said. “Even when we’re doing those foreshadowing scenes of what the relationship is going to become — or lack of relationship — it’s sad. I trust Chris so much, and he’s just been such a good friend and co-worker and co-star and scene-stealer. It’s really hard. We definitely both try to avoid it. It’s like [moans in pain]. We know it’s there, so let’s just not put salt in the wound. [Laughs].”
It sounds like Metz and Sullivan have a lot in common with This Is Us fans who aren’t looking forward to Kate and Toby’s divorce.
Chrissy Metz teases when Kate and Toby start to fall apart in ‘This Is Us’ Season 6
Thankfully, fans will have plenty of time to prepare for the moment Kate and Toby separate in This Is Us Season 6. During her Entertainment Weekly interview, Chrissy Metz teased when the audience could expect to see the beginning of the end for the couple and when sparks would start to fly between Kate and Phillip.
“Not too early,” the actor revealed. “[In] the early episodes of the season, she’s getting to know [Phillip] and seeing things that she didn’t remotely understand about Phillip. You can see them getting along, but there’s definitely no romance — yet. The episode that I got to co-write, which is [episode] 9, which is Kate’s episode — that’s going to be a massive turning point for Kate and Toby.”
This Is Us Season 6 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
