Young Randall struggles to be the caretaker of his family in ‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 10

Per IMDb, series star Justin Hartley directed “Every Version of You,” and Kay Oyegun wrote it. The hour’s synopsis reads, “Randall and Rebecca embark on a road trip and reflect on their past.” But This Is Us Season 6 Episode 10 also flashed back to Randall as a child and young adult.

Like the previous two hours of the trilogy, episode 10 featured the Pearson’s trip to the pool. However, fans saw Randall’s perspective of the day in this hour. Randall joined his swimming class, where he went through a test. He passed, of course, and his teacher cleared him for the deep end. However, Randall wanted to be with his family in the shallow end. And somehow, he convinced everyone to get in the water.

The episode also continued the story of when the Big Three accidentally locked themselves in the abandoned pool in the late ’90s. A cop showed up and busted them for trespassing and underage drinking. Randall talked to the cop and convinced him to let them go.

The three siblings decided to continue their night at the diner where Kate worked. But Randall called Rebecca first to let her know where they were. He also tried to make her feel better after she expressed her sadness about Miguel moving. Randall told his mother that he got her smiley face cookies — their favorite.

Randall lied to Kevin and Kate about how he got the cop to release them. In reality, he told the police officer that their family was struggling following their father’s death. Plus, he was planning on being president one day, so he couldn’t get arrested in This Is Us Season 6 Episode 10.

Randall deals with the fallout of the Deja and Malik situation

Earlier in This Is Us Season 6, Deja informed her family that she wanted to finish high school early and join Malik in Boston. Randall didn’t take this news very well, and he told Malik to stay away from Deja. Unfortunately, Deja found out about Randall’s warning at the cabin, and she was less than pleased.

Malik broke up with Deja, and she confronted Randall. She told him that she hated him, and he countered that getting her GED to be with Malik wasn’t good enough for her. And in the heat of the moment, Deja hit Randall where it hurt. She said, “No, I’m not [your daughter]. Tess and Annie are your daughters. I’m just some girl you took from her mom.”

The next morning, Deja was gone. Tess told Randall and Beth that she had left for Boston to convince Malik to get back together with her. Randall went after her, and Rebecca insisted that she join him after he made a quip about her choosing Kate over him to be her executor. So the mother and son embarked on a road trip in This Is Us Season 6 Episode 10.

Randall and Rebecca go on a road trip in ‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 10

While on the road in This Is Us Season 6 Episode 10, Randall brushed off his comments about Kate as a stupid joke. Rebecca accepted the excuse for the time being.

The two stopped for food, and Beth called to let them know that she got in touch with Deja, who had made it to Boston. Randall moved to leave, but Rebecca imparted some advice to her son. She told him to give Deja some space, and they would go to Boston the following day. Randall agreed.

Rebecca and Randall went to a local bar, where they drank and played darts. Later, they retreated to a motel. While in their room, Jae-Won called Randall to tell him that the senior senator from Pennsylvania had reached out again. Randall brushed him off, and Rebecca asked what the senator wanted. And Randall dropped a bomb. The senator was retiring, and he wanted Randall to be on the shortlist to replace him. However, Randall was hesitant to agree.

The next day, Rebecca told Randall why she couldn’t make him the executor. She knew that he would move heaven and earth for her, and she couldn’t ask him to do that anymore when he had spent his whole life doing that. Randall then told her that he would win if he ran for office.

Deja called Randall to come to pick her up, and he and Rebecca arrived in Boston. Deja got in the car, and Randall stayed behind with Malik. The young man told Randall that he didn’t break up with Deja because of what he said. Malik did it because he loved Deja and wanted the best for her. Randall reassured him that just because a door closes doesn’t mean it can’t reopen. Back in the car, Deja apologized to Randall and told him that he was her dad.

They returned home. Randall confirmed the meeting with the senator. And Rebecca put memories from her and Randall’s trip in a box labeled “Randall.” She has boxes for all of her children. In San Francisco, Kate told Toby that she wasn’t ready to move to San Francisco, and Toby told her that the Big Green Egg smoker had arrived.
