The event that This Is Us fans have been waiting for all season long is finally here — Kate and Toby’s breakup. This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12, aka the 100th episode, will detail how and when the couple decides to divorce. However, thanks to photos of the hour, we also know that episode 12 features Kate and Phillip’s courtship.

Kate and Phillip grow closer in ‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 12

'This Is Us' Season 6 Episode 12 stars Chris Geere and Chrissy Metz, in character as Kate and Phillip, share scenes. Kate and Phillip appear to be on a date in the This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12 photos. They share margaritas at a restaurant as Kate smiles at Phillip. And in another picture, Phillip caresses Kate’s face and looks like he is about to kiss her forehead. A different image also shows the couple adorably singing karaoke on another day. So perhaps there’s hope for some happy tears in what is expected to be a heartbreaking episode.

While speaking with NBC Insider, Chrissy Metz teased how Kate and Phillip come together. She said, “We’re definitely gonna see who Phillip really is as a human being and how he’s showed up for her as a friend first. Right now, he’s a bit of an a**. Everyone’s like, ‘What? Why in the world would she go for him and not want to stay with Toby?’ But we do get to start seeing their commonalities. He’s more than what we ever thought he was.”

Metz added, “He does show up for her in an unsuspecting way, but it’s never out of turn or out of time. They wait until things are finalized [with Kate’s divorce from Toby] for things to kick off for them. I just want to always make that clear because it was never about cheating. It wasn’t that Toby fell in love with somebody else or Kate fell in love with Phillip, and that’s why they got a divorce. Through their friendship, Kate and Phillip started really caring for each other.”

This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12 jumps around in time, so viewers will likely see the beginning of Kate and Phillip’s romance. But according to Metz, they will develop a friendship before becoming romantically involved.

Toby moves to his own place following his and Kate’s divorce

The synopsis of This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12, co-written by Dan Fogelman, Elizabeth Berger, and Isaac Aptaker, reads, “Kate and Toby’s relationship evolves over a few years.” And the photos tease segments of this “evolution.”

Fans know that Kate and Toby split thanks to the This Is Us Season 5 finale flash-forward. So while the couple will try to save their marriage, none of their efforts will work. And following their breakup, Toby will move out and find a new place, as seen in the hour’s pictures. But since they share kids, Kate and Toby will still have to play a significant role in each other’s lives.

Hopefully, Toby will find someone new like Kate does with Phillip. For now, all the This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12 photos reveal is that Toby is alone after the devastating split. However, NBC has to keep some mystery until the hour premieres, after all.

‘This Is Us’: Dan Fogelman Admits It ‘Wouldn’t Be Responsible’ to Make Season 7

Since This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12 is the show’s 100th episode, it makes sense that it would take viewers to the very far future with adult Jack and his wife, Lucy. Unfortunately, it’s hard to tell what happens between the couple during the special hour based on the photos.

In one picture, Jack appears to be singing at a club. And in the other image, Jack and Lucy smile at the camera.

Episode 12 is about Kate and Toby’s evolving relationship, though, so maybe they’re at the club supporting their son. But taking into account that many fans believe Kate might be dead in the future, that possibility seems bleak. Or perhaps This Is Us will finally reveal that Kate is, in fact, alive. We’re choosing to be positive because this episode will undoubtedly provoke a rollercoaster of emotions in the viewers.

This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12, “Katoby,” airs Tuesday, April 12, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
