The ‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 18 trailer features a funeral and a couple of flashbacks

Dan Fogelman wrote This Is Us Season 6 Episode 18, “Us,” and Ken Olin directed the hour. And the synopsis for “Us” reads, “The Big Three come to new understandings about life.”

The series finale preview is unlike any promo videos for previous episodes. Unlike the typical thirty-second previews, it’s over two minutes long, and it features footage from earlier seasons. There are some moments in the video that appear old due to the age of the Big Three actors. But we know that they are never-before-seen scenes that they filmed years ago for the series finale.

The cast and crew have teased over the years that they had already filmed some scenes for the final episode. And now, fans finally know why. The scenes in question include the Big Three kid actors Parker Bates, Mackenzie Hancsicsak, and Lonnie Chavez, and the Big Three toddler actors Kaz Womack, Isabella Rose Landau, and Ca’Ron Jaden Coleman. These moments were filmed to capture these young actors at certain ages before they got older.

The new footage includes Rebecca pushing their toddlers on swings, Jack teaching Kevin and Randall how to shave, and the family eating breakfast together. Jack says, “Try to appreciate the moments. That’s what we’re doing, just collecting these little moments. And we spend the rest of our lives looking back, trying to remember.” Rebecca also tells Jack, “I really wish that I had spent more time appreciating it when it was all happening instead of just worrying about when it would end.”

The This Is Us Season 6 Episode 18 preview additionally features Kevin, Kate, and Randall getting ready for Rebecca’s funeral.

Mandy Moore teases ‘Us’

Although not much else is known about This Is Us Season 6 Episode 18, the cast and crew have done their best to tease the final hour. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mandy Moore revealed what fans should expect in the series finale.

“I think the simplicity of what’s in store for people in parts of this episode are what the whole series is really about,” the actor shared. “People waiting for things to be tied up perfectly in a bow with every single character and every single story need to abandon that idea because that’s not the reality of life anyway.”

Moore continued, “You finish telling one person’s story, and it’s like, ‘Yeah, but they have children, or they will continue having a life. And their children will have children. This story could just go on forever and ever and ever.’ But having said that, the simplicity and the beauty of the quiet, simple, seemingly mundane moments of this family’s life are going to feel like a warm hug for people.”

She also claimed that Dan Fogelman “stuck the landing” and “no one’s going to be disappointed” with This Is Us Season 6 Episode 18.

‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 18 writer and director preview the series finale

This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman also teased what’s to come in the series finale while speaking with Deadline.

“In the last episode, we will try to capture something simple which, while sad, is kind of a day in the life, which is so much of what the show is about, set against Rebecca’s funeral,” the writer explained.

Fogelman intentionally resolved all of the show’s mysteries before the finale “so people can sit with the family in the final episode in the simplest of ways. While it will make you cry, it will make you sad, the end of the finale moves me in a way that is different. I think the cast and crew captured something about the human condition and the condition of being a person in the family that I am really proud of.”

And director Ken Olin told Entertainment Weekly, “If there’s such a thing as a 45-minute coda, that’s kind of what [the finale] is. There’s a wonderful celebration of some of the most beautiful, small moments in their lives. And it’s uplifting. It’s certainly affirmative about this family. It’s really beautiful.”

This Is Us Season 6 Episode 18, aka the series finale titled “Us,” premieres Tuesday, May 24, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
