‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Will Explore ‘Something Difficult’, According to Creator Dan Fogelman
Fans are still talking about the season 5 finale of This Is Us. A lot happened. According to creator Dan Fogelman, there’s even more in store for season 6 of the hit NBC drama, including something he refers to as “difficult.”

Season 6 of ‘This Is Us’ will have a lot of questions to answer regarding Kate and Toby
The finale of This Is Us Season 5 revealed Kate (Chrissy Metz) preparing to get married to — what we’re told to believe — her boss Phillip (Chris Geere). The shocking twist cemented theories that Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan) would divorce.
The show is known for throwing viewers off, so the twists feel even twistier.
“It felt really good to us for [Kate’s love after Toby] to be somebody who’s been involved in her career and the cause that she’s really believing in,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
While that’s not exactly revealing how things will go down, he also addressed whether Kate (or Miguel) die in the future. That theory, as fans say, explain why they’ve not been seen in the flash-forward.
“I think that we have more surprises and turns in store,” he said via Deadline. “I don’t know that any of those will come to that level of catastrophe.”
Fogelman hinted at what’s to come in the most cryptic way
While fans continue digesting and dissecting everything shown in the finale, Fogelman confirmed that Geere will be a series regular in season. That doesn’t confirm whether he and Kate end up together, but it does lend itself to more theories.
“With Kevin and recently Kate’s relationship, the show has tried to put forward some really successful marriages,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “But the honest truth is that really loving and great marriages don’t always survive and marriage is not for everybody. With both Kevin and with the second marriage of Kate, we have some new territory to explore.”
Fogelman also referenced Kate and Toby’s demise as something they’ve had coming “for quite some time.”
“We’ve hinted many times in the deeper future that something was amiss between [Kate] and [Toby]; it’s been part of our plan all along,” he said.
He continued: “[That journey] is something we haven’t really done on this show yet and these two actors are going to have some really meaty stuff to dig into next year,” he added. “Like everything on this show, I think we’re going to be able to find something difficult and find something beautiful inside.”
Fans think Kate and Toby are endgame
Despite all clues leading toward Kate and Phillip, some fans are team #Katoby for the long haul.
“Kate and Toby are renewing their vows!!! That is why movie quotes are allowed! The British guy is Madison’s long-lost brother from the mother side,” a fan posted on the show’s Instagram page.
“I think they’re still together. Renewing their vows, and British man is actually Madison’s long-lost brother (which is why he says, brother-in-law). So hoping Kevin and Madison are married!” another said.
“But Toby is in the clip from the time they all gather at Kevin’s with Rebecca on her deathbed, he tells them all he’s just spoken to Kate and she & Jack are on their way……..surely Kate doesn’t marry the Teacher guy…….” a fan added.
And finally, one simply said, “Kate and Toby forever.”
We don’t know how things will unfold for Kate and Toby in season 6 but if Fogelman’s taught us anything it’s to expect the unexpected.
