Within the following year, Kate got pregnant with their first child but had a miscarriage. However, the couple was determined to try again and eventually welcomed their baby, Jack Pearson-Damon.
In This Is Us Season 5, Kate and Toby expanded their family by adopting their daughter, Haley Damon. Although they were delighted by the new baby, Toby lost his job due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Nonetheless, the season finale appeared to have a silver lining for the couple when Toby accepted a San Francisco job. Despite the distance from San Francisco to Los Angeles, KaToby agrees to make their marriage work.
At the end of the finale, viewers watched as Kate prepped for her second wedding. While she’s getting ready, her co-worker, Phillip (Chris Geere), is in the next room. Soon, fans discovered Kate is getting married to Phillip, and she and Toby are divorced. In an interview with Glamour, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman says the cast has known about Toby and Kate’s split for several months.

Since the This Is Us season finale, Fogelman confirmed that Toby and Kate would divorce in season 6. However, the journey of their breakup remains unknown by fans. Many Reddit users have shared theories regarding how the split will take place.
In one thread, several fans believe Kate might initiate the divorce. Additionally, one fan argued that the character’s increase in her self-esteem caused the split. Others, though, feel that Kate taking help from her brother, Kevin (Justin Hartley), took a toll on their relationship.
“Toby might end things with Kate if she took help from Kevin,” one Reddit user said. “Toby specifically told her not to, but she promised Kevin she would if the need arises.”

This Is Us will return for season 6 in early 2022. Fogelman decided to air the show midseason. Although fans have to wait several more months than a typical season, the series’ creator promises to answer all their questions.
“There will be no looming questions when we get to the end of next season,” Fogelman says. “The audience won’t always like 100% of the decisions you make for your characters, but I don’t think anything will be left on the table. All those future timelines will get resolutions.”
