This Is Us fans have been itching to find out how Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Miguel (Jon Huertas) got together since the start of the series. Now, the NBC drama is nearing its final season, and everyone has been wondering whether the couple’s backstory will ever play out onscreen. Then in a recent interview, Huertas updated fans on Rebecca and Miguel in This Is Us Season 6 — and the actor’s comments do not disappoint.

What happened to Rebecca and Miguel in ‘This Is Us’ Season 5?

This Is Us fans watched Miguel and Rebecca support one another throughout the years. The characters started off as friends. But after Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) death, they lost touch.

Eventually, Rebecca and Miguel reconnected and got married. That said, fans still don’t have the full story. At the start of This Is Us Season 5, Rebecca and Miguel were supposed to go to St. Louis for an Alzheimer’s trial. But due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the couple quarantined at the Pearson family cabin in Pennsylvania. 

Meanwhile, viewers received a few subtle hints about Rebecca and Miguel’s past. For example, in This Is Us Season 5 Episode 8, Rebecca thanked Miguel because he had to “bear Jack’s death differently” for their marriage. Nevertheless, the NBC drama hasn’t touched on the couple’s actual story.

What the ‘This Is Us’ team previously shared about Miguel and Rebecca’s backstory

When Dan Fogelman teased Rebecca’s upcoming storyline for This Is Us Season 5, the creator suggested that the character’s relationship with Miguel would be explored in the new season. According to NBC News, Fogelman said:

We have a big storyline planned for Mandy in the next upcoming season in present day as an older woman and also her past timelines. Particularly, it’s an opportunity for us when we land in St. Louis with her with Miguel. … Here’s an opportunity where we’re going to be joining them in a location together, kind of, together, as they kind of undergo this journey that they didn’t necessarily plan on trying. And they will also allow us to kind of get towards, which has always been the plan in the back part of our series, get towards a further understanding of how their relationship bloomed, then stalled, then kind of bloomed again, and getting really inside of their lives.

As of this write-up, there are three episodes left in This Is Us Season 5, and fans still don’t have Rebecca and Miguel’s backstory. But according to co-executive producer and writer Vera Herbert in February 2021, it’s coming in season 6.

“I think it’s probably more likely going to be next season, because it’s the thing that when we dive into it, we really want to have the room to explore it,” Herbert told Entertainment Weekly of Rebecca and Miguel. “But it’s definitely coming — and it’s a thing we talk about a lot.”

‘This Is Us’ Season 5: NBC Updates Fans on the Next 3 Episodes

In an interview with NBC News on May 10, Huertas updated fans on Rebecca and Miguel’s arc in This Is Us. And ultimately, the actor confirmed viewers will find out how the couple got together in season 6.

“Next season, I have a sneaking suspicion that we’re gonna see the Rebecca and Miguel love story a little deeper than we have before,” Huertas said. “We’re gonna see how they got together, for sure.”

Now, This Is Us fans will finally get to watch Rebecca and Miguel’s romance blossom in the sixth and final season. So that will be one mystery down — and a million more to go. Stay tuned.
