In This Is Us Season 6 Episode 5, “Heart and Soul,” Kevin invited Cassidy to the cabin when she was at her lowest. The war veteran revealed she divorced her husband, and he was out of town with their son. Meanwhile, both Cassidy and Kevin suggested that they were open to casually sleeping together.
That said, Kevin tried to take things further very quickly. While getting ice cream, Kevin took Cassidy’s hand, and she made it clear that a romantic relationship would not work.
“There’s no reality to a relationship working with us. Your kids are in LA. My kid is in Pennsylvania,” Cassidy said. “Your inner darkness is not the same as mine. … You are chasing the wrong blonde in the wrong city. And if you want that rom-com love story, you should go make things right with her.”
She continued, “You’ve been blowing up women’s lives for the better part of two decades. I know you mean well, I do. But you are like a big, handsome wrecking ball. … You married one, cheated, and then nearly married her again. The current one, you couldn’t say, ‘I love you.’ But now, you’re obsessed with hating the new boyfriend. Be careful or you’re gonna blow that up, too. I’m too messed up already. Leave me in peace.”
What the chat between Kevin and Cassidy means for ‘This Is Us’ Season 6
When speaking with Entertainment Weekly, co-executive producer Julia Brownell revealed what’s next for Kevin after Cassidy’s remarks in This Is Us Season 6 Episode 5. Brownell shared that Kevin will “take what [Cassidy] said to heart” and make some changes that will eventually lead him to his future wife. Brownell said:
“I think that this is a definite step on his way to finding the person he’s with. Seeing Madison [Caitlin Thompson] move on so quickly with someone else made him doubt his decision at the end of season 5. And Cassidy calling him out on how quickly he creates these romantic comedies in his head is an awakening for him. And that putting it out in the open will help him a lot as he moves forward.”
Is this the end for Cassidy and Kevin on ‘This Is Us’?
Cassidy’s comments will lead Kevin to his forever person in This Is Us Season 6. But despite everything she said, it’s clear that Kevin and Cassidy could still end up together.
Still speaking with EW, Brownell hinted that fans shouldn’t “close the door on Cassidy just yet.” Then when speaking with Deadline, the co-executive producer confirmed that Morrison’s character will return in future episodes of the final season.
“This is not the last you see of Cassidy,” Brownell said. “She’ll take Kevin up on his offer to help out with the cabin, and continues to be a part of Kevin and Nicky’s [Griffin Dunne] lives in a surprising way.”
