‘This Is Us’: The Hit NBC Series Is Filmed Exclusively in 1 City
As fans know, This Is Us takes place in a lot of different locations around the country, in and around the homes of the many members of the Pearson family. But in reality, where does the filming take place? It’s certainly possible to film on-location across the country, but that’s not the most cost-effective option — which is why the This Is Us crew films exclusively in one city instead.
Where is ‘This Is Us’ filmed?
Since the pilot episode, viewers have followed along with Jack and Rebecca’s family as they’ve grown over the decades. Starting out with just the two of them, the Pearson family begins in Pittsburgh, where Jack and Rebecca meet and start growing their family.
Flashing forward to the present-day storylines, Rebecca now lives in Los Angeles with Miguel. Kate also lives in Los Angeles, Calif. Everyone else in the family, however, lives on the East Coast; Kevin lives in New York and Randall lives in New Jersey. It’s easy to forget how spread out the Pearsons are, given how much they’re involved in each other’s lives. But the reality of their many different locations provides a unique challenge for the showrunners to develop sets that reflect the differences in their home bases.
‘This Is Us’ isn’t filmed on the East Coast at all
Even though half of the Pearson family lives on the East Coast — including young Jack and young Rebecca — the show is actually filmed completely in and around Los Angeles, according to Curbed Los Angeles. So, while the settings for present-day Rebecca and Kate are accurate, the other family members’ homes took a bit of trickery to make happen, with things like editing out palm trees and working in different weather patterns you would see on the East Coast.
Specifically, This Is Us is filmed mainly at Stages 31 and 32 at Paramount Studios. However, the show is shot in a lot of other locations around the greater LA area: Kate’s LA home is located in Hancock Park, Randall’s New Jersey home is actually located in Altadena, and the Pearsons’ Pittsburgh home can be found in Eagle Rock.
In addition to the family homes, other locations that are seen throughout the show are filmed around LA as well. The pool the Pearsons frequent in Pittsburgh flashbacks is actually located in Long Beach, and the family’s cabin is located in Topanga.
Where can we expect to see the Pearsons next?
Wherever This Is Us takes the Pearsons next, fans will be lining up to watch. After season 5 wrapped a couple of months ago, fans have been theorizing what the final season will look like for the spread-out family.
Season 5 ended with a major cliffhanger for Kate. Viewers got a sneak peak of her future wedding to her co-worker, Phillip. So, not only did fans learn that Kate’s marriage to Toby will ultimately fail, but they also learned that we’ll see an entirely new relationship develop over the course of season 6.
The other major storyline that we can expect to see next season will center around Rebecca and Miguel. It will show how they got together, why they separated, and how they found their way back to each other. Their relationship has been known about since the show’s beginning, but viewers still haven’t found out the exact details of Rebecca’s relationship with her deceased husband’s best friend.
