This Is Us made an impact on viewers with its whopping two-hour season 5 premiere. But now, it looks like everyone will have to hold on before the Pearson family storyline continues. This Is Us won’t be on tonight, Nov. 3, 2020. Here’s why and when the NBC drama returns with new episodes.

Why ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 isn’t on tonight, Nov. 3, and when new episodes return

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, NBC News will cover the 2020 U.S. presidential election during the usual time slot for This Is Us. The family drama will return next week on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 9 p.m. ET.

As you may remember, Nov. 10 is the original premiere date for This Is Us Season 5. However, the network moved up the season starter by two weeks. Then in an interview with Deadline, creator Dan Fogelman revealed the show’s team thought it was important to release the premiere before the election.

“It was really important to me — and to us — to get these episodes on before the election, not because they are political, but because I think they are difficult and they are hopeful,” Fogelman said. “We felt it was important to us to put them on TV now with no agenda other than that.”

According to the This Is Us Season 5 Episode 3 synopsis, the Pearsons will gear up for a few “changes” in multiple timelines. In the premiere, Kevin (Justin Hartley) proposed to Madison (Caitlin Thompson). So the couple will navigate their engagement in the new episode. That said, Kevin and Madison’s romance may not be easy moving forward.

“It’s not just going to be this easy love story like some of our other love stories have been,” Fogelman told Deadline after the premiere. “There’s affection and chemistry there. But they still don’t really know each other. So it’s fair to say they have an up-and-down journey ahead of them.”

Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) will also “take a big step” in the new This Is Us episode. The couple started the adoption process in the premiere. When speaking with Entertainment Weekly ahead of the premiere, Metz confirmed Kate and Toby’s adoption storyline will be “challenging.” The actor said:

To be human is you feel like you’re always in over your head, and I’ve heard so many people numerous times say, ‘You’re never really ready for a child.’ Like, you get ready. … They’re very eager to have that, but I think it’s coming from a good place. I don’t know where it’s going to evolve or unravel, I should say. Because it’s going to be challenging, for sure. But I think it’s lovely that they both want it and that there’s the best intentions there.

Then the latest promo trailer teased the challenges ahead. “We’re dealing with a single mother who could change her mind about us,” Toby tells Kate in the preview.

Meanwhile, the This Is Us trailer hinted at some drama between Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and Tess (Eris Baker). In the teaser, Beth sternly tells her daughter, “Do not post a profane video for the world to see.” It also seems we’re going back to the Big Three’s awkward teen years. Per the episode synopsis, Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) will “brace for puberty.”

As always, the Pearsons have a story to tell when This Is Us Season 5 returns from its weeklong hiatus. So stay tuned. The third episode airs Tuesday, Nov. 10, on NBC.
