The Marvel Cinematic Universe has no shortage of characters. Along with having plenty of superheroes to draw from, each of those heroes has a cast of supporting characters surrounding them to help support their storylines.

One character who’s had plenty of supporting characters in the MCU is Thor. One of those characters was Lady Sif, an Asgardian friend of Thor’s. Sif disappeared from the MCU for quite some time, but there’s good reason to think she may be back. Let’s take a closer look at her MCU journey and determine where it makes sense for a return.

Who is Lady Sif?

According to the MCU wiki, Lady Sif is one of Thor’s closest allies. She plays a prominent role in both Thor and Thor: The Dark World. She’s in love with Thor, but her love becomes unrequited as he falls for Dr. Jane Foster of Earth. She’s known for being a fierce warrior, though being a woman puts her at a disadvantage in the eyes of some of Asgard’s other warriors.

She nonetheless fights fiercely and with honor beside Thor, helping him battle Loki on numerous occasions. Sif later had a run as a character featured prominently on ABC’s Agents of SHIELD

Lady Sif’s fate in the MCU

Sif is eventually banished from Asgard by Loki (posing as Odin), due to her knowing Loki’s deceit. Sif’s prominence declines significantly throughout the MCU, at least on film. She plays no role in Thor: Ragnarok beyond a passing mention. Her death happens offscreen in Avengers: Infinity War when she’s a victim of Thanos’ snap along with half the known universe. She returns to life when the Avengers reverse the snap.

For longstanding fans of the Thor comics, it had to be disappointing to see Sif’s treatment on the big screen. While she was never going to be more than a supporting character – Thor will always be the centerpiece – she got less and less screen time as the series moved on.

Part of this is due to the fact that there just isn’t enough time to go around. Thor has so many characters in his inner circle that serving all of them adequately would seem impossible. In Thor: Ragnarok, for example, there are major subplots for Hulk, Loki, and Valkyrie. This left little time for any development from other established characters. It’s likely part of the reason why the filmmakers opted to keep Sif out of Asgard.

Sif’s other option would have made her a victim of Hela’s shocking brutality, much like Thor’s famed Warriors Three. She was spared death by Hela’s hand and instead perished due to Thanos.

In a Reddit thread decrying Thor’s lack of reaction to his friends, the Warriors Three, perishing in Thor: Ragnarok, one poster brought up Lady Sif and the possibility of a comeback. With at least one more Thor film planned for the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder, a return of the character would make a lot of sense.

For one, she’s one of Thor’s last remaining (and living) ties to Asgard. Her presence in the film could help bring his story full circle. The film will also focus on Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster character – Sif could also help serve her storyline as well.

With many Asgardians dying at Hela’s hand in Thor: Ragnarok, having Sif return would be an easy way to reintroduce her. Some fans think the film may be too busy to fit her in, but she doesn’t have to have a lot of screen time to make an impact. A brief cameo would suffice (and would likely be all she would get).

Sif may not be a major character in Thor’s universe, but she’s an important one. Don’t be surprised if she shows back up after being relegated to TV for a while.
