‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Trailer Reveals First Look at Natalie Portman as Mighty Thor
After months of begging for the first Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, Marvel finally granted fans their wish. The studio released the official teaser of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film on Monday, April 18, and it is everything fans wanted and more. The video contained the first looks of Thor, the Guardians, and the highly anticipated debut of Natalie Portman as Mighty Thor.
Natalie Portman returns as Mighty Thor in the ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ trailer
Marvel first announced that Natalie Portman would return for the fourth Thor film during San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. And they also revealed that not only would Jane Foster find her way back into Thor’s life but that she would wield Mjolnir in the movie, as well.
The end of the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer shared the first live-action look at Portman as Mighty Thor. As a battle rages in the background, lightning courses through Mjolnir as it flies across the sky. The hammer lands in Jane’s hand, and Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, looks at his ex-girlfriend in shock.
The video only shows Mighty Thor for a few seconds, but it was enough to make fans lose it over Natalie Portman’s character.
Fans react to Natalie Portman in the ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ trailer
Following the release of the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, Marvel fans expressed their excitement over seeing Natalie Portman as Mighty Thor for the first time.
One fan wrote, “Natalie Portman as Jane Foster has my full attention!”
“I can’t wait to see Natalie Portman steal the show as Mighty Thor,” another person shared. “Jane Foster is BACK!”
“I will just be watching the first look at Natalie Portman as Mighty Thor in the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer on repeat,” one fan concluded.
Someone even noticed parallels between Mighty Thor in the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer and Captain America in Avengers: Endgame. They said, “The similarities of these scenes of Steve Rogers and Jane Foster, [I know that’s right]!”
The fourth ‘Thor’ film is all about romance
Perhaps the look between Thor and Jane in the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer indicates that there are still sparks between the former couple. After all, director Taika Waititi indicated that he wanted the Thor sequel to be a romance film.
Waititi told Wired, “What I wanted to do from the beginning was to ask: ‘What are people expecting the least from this franchise?’ Oh, I know — a full-blown love story!”
There’s potential for romance between Thor and Jane, but Valkyrie might also find herself a love interest in the film. Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie, revealed during San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 that her character’s first order of business as the ruler of New Asgard would be to find her queen. Only time will tell if that’s a new MCU character or if maybe Mighty Thor and Valkyrie will find love. Anything is possible when Taika Waititi is involved.
Thor: Love and Thunder premieres exclusively in theaters on July 8.
