‘Thor: Love & Thunder’: Lady Sif Deserves More Than a Cameo, MCU Fans Say
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has come to a grinding halt this year, but that doesn’t mean their films aren’t still developing. Marvel has plenty of new projects lined up for its next phase.
That includes the fourth Thor film, titled Thor: Love and Thunder. The movie will check in with everyone’s favorite Norse God following the Avengers defeat of Thanos. But fans are hoping it does more than follow Thor. They’re also hoping plenty of their favorite side characters from Thor’s adventures get their due as well.
One of those characters is Lady Sif, Thor’s trusted ally. Here’s why MCU fans say she deserves more than a cameo in the next go-around.
What we know so far about ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’
Here’s what we know so far about Thor: Love and Thunder. According to IMDb:
- Taika Waititi will return to the director’s chair.
- Natalie Portman will return as Jane Foster (and reportedly take on the mantle of Thor)
- Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson will come back after Thor: Ragnarok.
- The Guardians of the Galaxy are slated to make an appearance.
- Christian Bale will play the film’s villain.
That certainly seems like an interesting mix of talent. But what about some other characters from Thor’s orbit?
There’s been no word about Tom Hiddleston coming back as Loki, though his return wouldn’t be shocking. Even though his character died in Avengers: Infinity War, a Loki from an alternate timeline is set to appear in his own series on Disney+. Idris Elba’s Heimdall died at the hands of Thanos in a rather definitive way, pre-Infinity snap. Hela killed Thor’s faithful friends the Warriors Three.
That would leave one Thor ally who could potentially return: Lady Sif.
Sif’s role in the Thor films
In 2011’s Thor, Sif is a trusted friend to Thor. She appears in Thor: The Dark World with a reduced role. In Thor: Ragnarok, she’s reduced even further to not appearing but only being mentioned briefly by name. She then had a more substantial run appearing on Agents of SHIELD.
According to an interview with Alexander in Variety, she enjoyed playing the character and would likely be up for it again:
“I genuinely love the character Sif. Each time I get to play her, there’s this growth in the character and we find out more of who she is. That is a blast, because I’ve been able to slowly create this woman while still taking directions from all the comic books that existed before my performance.
It’s interesting that Sif has such a big backstory, whereas Jane has no backstory at all; they’re very opposite while at the same time both very tough and vulnerable. It’s a bit of a niche for me, I guess.”
It could be that Marvel made Jane into Thor’s love interest because they had more of a blank canvas, whereas with Sif there’s more material featuring the character. Either way, the character has taken something of a backseat in recent films and that’s an issue many Marvel fans would love to see rectified in the upcoming film.
Why fans think Sif deserves more than just a cameo
Marvel fans joined in a Reddit thread dedicated to discussing Alexander getting on board a plane to Atlanta. They speculated she was traveling there to film a part in the Disney+ series Loki. They also guessed whether she’d appear in the next Thor movie.
“I certainly hope so. Lady Sif was awesome in Agents if SHIELD, and the MCU should really use her more often.”
Sif may have had a declining role in Thor’s universe as those films came out, but Marvel clearly values her as a character. Her presence on Agents of SHIELD is evidence of that. Bringing her back seems like an easy decision.
