Miley Cyrus’ parents, Tish Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus, have supported their daughter’s music and TV career through the years. But now, the spotlight’s on them. Tish Cyrus filed for divorce against Billy Ray Cyrus in April 2022 — and it’s not the first time. Here’s more information on the couple’s relationship and how they nearly divorced twice before.

Miley Cyrus’ parents have been together for decades. According to The Sun, Tish Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus married on Dec. 28, 1993, after two years of dating. Together, they share five kids — Miley, Noah, Brandi, Trace, and Braison. Brandi and Trace were from Tish’s previous marriage. Billy Ray also has another son, Chris Cody.

Prior to marrying Tish, Billy Ray was married to Cindy Cyrus from 1986 to 1991, Wide Open Country reports. Cindy assisted Billy Ray in writing some of his songs, including “Wher’m I Gonna Live?” and “Some Gave All.” Once Cindy and Billy Ray called it quits, Billy Ray had a fling with Kristin Luckey, a waitress in South Carolina. He met Tish shortly after, and both women became pregnant with his kids. Tish was pregnant with Miley, and Luckey was pregnant with Christopher Cody.

Billy Ray financially supported Luckey, but he wanted to continue his relationship with Tish. After Tish got pregnant with their second child, Braison, they tied the knot.

The couple nearly divorced in 2010 and 2013

While Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus’ marriage seemed to get off to a rocky start right from the beginning, they managed to sustain their relationship through the years. But they hit a rough patch in 2010. The Sun notes Billy Ray filed for divorce in October 2010. The couple cited irreconcilable differences as the reason, People reports.

“As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time for our family,” the couple stated. “We are trying to work through some personal matters. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers.”

While it seemed like Tish and Billy Ray’s divorce was going to happen, it didn’t. They called off the divorce until 2013. Then, Tish filed in June 2013. A month later, they called off their second almost-divorce.

“We both woke up and realized we love each other and decided we want to stay together,” Billy Ray and Tish announced in a statement back in 2013, according to People. “We both went into couples therapy, something we haven’t done in 22 years of being together, and it’s brought us closer together and really opened up our communication in amazing ways.”

Back in 2010, rumors swirled regarding Tish Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus’ divorce filing. Reports claimed Poison rocker Brett Michaels and Tish had an affair, prompting Billy Ray to file for a divorce. Us Weekly reported an insider claimed Michaels became close with the Cyrus family after he and Miley released the song “Nothing to Lose.”

“Billy Ray was completely unaware of what was going on,” the source claimed.

Page Six reported that Michaels completely denied the claims. “This is someone stirring a pot,” Michaels’ rep said. “This is untrue. He respects the family and worked with Miley and Tish on a professional level.”
