Titanic premiered in 1997, and the romantic film became a worldwide phenomenon. Leonardo DiCaprio starred in Titanic as Jack Dawson, and Kate Winslet starred as Rose DeWitt Bukater.

One of the most famous scenes in the movie is known as the “draw me like one of your French girls” scene. In the scene, Rose asks Jack, an artist, to sketch her while she poses nude. While filming the famous Titanic scene, DiCaprio ended up ad-libbing a line and director James Cameron decided to keep it in the movie.

Kate Winslet flashed Leonardo DiCaprio when they filmed ‘Titanic’

After working on Titanic together, Winslet and DiCaprio became best friends. However, when they first began working together the two barely knew each other.

According to the book James Cameron’s Titanic, the first scene the actors ever filmed together was Winslet’s nude scene. To make DiCaprio more comfortable during filming, Winslet decided to flash him.

“I was naked in front of Leo on the first day of shooting,” Winslet said in James Cameron’s Titanic.

“She had no shame with it,” DiCaprio said. “She wanted to break the ice a little beforehand, so she flashed me. I wasn’t prepared for that, so she had one up on me. I was pretty comfortable after that.”

Leonardo DiCaprio improvised a line during the ‘Titanic’ scene

Titanic is over three hours long, and principal photography for the film took 160 days according to Business Insider. While filming was extremely demanding, actors were also given the chance to ad-lib and improvise some lines.

As fans see in the movie, Jack tells Rose to lay down “Over on the bed… the couch” as he prepares to draw her. The line makes it appear that while Jack is trying his best to be calm, he is actually incredibly nervous at the thought of drawing Rose’s portrait.

According to IMDb, the line was originally supposed to simply be “Lie on that couch.” While filming the scene, DiCaprio made an honest mistake and said “bed” instead of “couch.” Cameron ended up liking the accidental ad-lib so much he decided to keep it in the movie.

Leonardo DiCaprio used a hand double for the scene

For the drawing scene, Winslet did not use a body double while posing nude. DiCaprio on the other hand ended up using a hand double for the famous scene.

Throughout the scene, viewers of Titanic see Jack’s face as he sketches Rose, Rose posing, and a pair of hands drawing Rose. While one would assume that the hands in the scene belong to DiCaprio, they actually belong to Cameron, the director.

According to IMDb, Cameron sketched the image of Rose. Because he is left-handed and DiCaprio is right-handed, the shots of Cameron drawing were mirrored in the final version of the film.
