‘Today’s Savannah Guthrie Had 1 Final ‘Teeny’ Eye Surgery to Complete Her Eye Injury Recovery
It’s easy to forget that morning show host Savannah Guthrie ever injured her eye in 2019. The Today star looks perfectly back to normal.
She shared recently that her treatment ended this week after one last surgery, a “teeny” one that completed what was a very long process.
Guthrie was accidentally injured in 2019
According to Guthrie, she was at home with her son Charley in November 2019 when he accidentally hit the show host in the eye with a toy, injuring her retina and causing the loss of vision.
Guthrie said at the time that “I got hit … Charley threw a toy train right at my eye and it tore my retina.
“It happened last week, actually, and then I lost my vision in my right eye about 24 hours later and then it turned out to be kind of serious. They were afraid my retina was detached.”
The ‘Today’ host ultimately had to have surgery
As much as her doctors tried to avoid surgery, relying on laser therapy instead, it was decided that Guthrie did indeed need surgical treatment. Heeding her doctors’ advice to seriously consider undergoing a medical procedure to save her sight, she explained on Today: “They told me to just take it easy and they’ve been doing a bunch of laser procedures to avoid having to do the whole surgery.”
She revealed that, “It was so blurry from — not to get too gross — but there was so much blood in my eye that it completely blocked my vision.”
At the time of her surgery, Guthrie was, naturally, absent from her hosting duties for a while.
Hoda Kotb updated viewers, sending “good wishes to our girl, Savannah.”
Post-surgery, Guthrie was instructed by doctors to remain as still as possible with her head in a recovery pillow. It looked uncomfortable but, of course, necessary.
Her final, tiny surgery
The mother of two was overjoyed to report this week that she would have to undergo one, final, very small procedure to complete the process of healing for her retina.
She wrote on an Instagram post, “One last teeny tiny eye surgery and I’m back in business!”
Her followers on Instagram offered their well wishes to Guthrie.
Former Today co-host Tamron Hall wrote, “Sending love…”
Kristin Welker who co-anchors Weekend Today wrote, “Sending you love for a speedy recovery!!”
Reporter Lisa Petrillo wrote “Oh I “eye” can relate!! I’ve had same exact surgeries as you -except add one more retinal detachment in same eye for me .. glad you’re on the mend!!”
After a process that seemed endless, Guthrie’s eye injury surgeries and treatments are now in her rear-view mirror – which she can see perfectly well.
