Tom Selleck has been playing Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods for many years. Frank has two living sons named Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Jamie (Will Estes). The actor talked about calling one of those actors, “son” in real life.

After working for over 10 years together, it’s not surprising that the cast of Blue Bloods is like a family. The actors don’t always get to be in scenes together, but the people who play Reagans film the dinner scenes together for each episode. Selleck talked about Wahlberg in a new interview.

“I call him son,” Selleck told Entertainment Tonight. “Every time I see him, I go ‘Hello, son.’ He goes, ‘Hello, dad.’”

Blue Bloods has managed to last longer than Magnum P.I., which helped Selleck gain fame. The cop show will reach 12 seasons while the private investigator show lasted 8. “I couldn’t conceive of doing anything longer than I did Magnum,” Selleck said.

Donnie Wahlberg once said it was ‘intimidating’ directing Tom Selleck

Wahlberg mostly acts, but he did direct one episode of Blue Bloods. That would be the season 4 episode “Manhattan Queens” where Danny and Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) investigate the murder of a popular drag queen. The actor said directing Selleck was the intimidating part of the job.

“I think I’m smart enough to know that you don’t really direct Tom,” he told PopCulutre.com. So what did he do instead?

“I just came at it from an actor’s point of view and gave Tom the comfort and space to do what he felt comfortable doing and then just sort of adding some little finishing touches from there,” he said. “Tom’s such a perfectionist.”

Wahlberg explained that he didn’t come determined to tell Selleck how to approach his scenes for a reason. “He’s already come up with 500 ideas himself a week before you even sit down with him,” he said. “That’s how devoted he is to his work.”

Both Selleck and Wahlerg are passionate about continuing their ‘Blue Bloods’ roles

Some actors would be ready to walk away from a show after 11 seasons. But Selleck and Wahlberg have talked about doing another season.

“I just know that we’re having more fun than we’ve ever had on the show,” Wahlberg told PopCulture.com. “It’s still the number one show on Friday night for 10 years, and it’s been a great run, and I don’t see it stopping anytime soon.”

Selleck made a bold statement about Blue Bloods lasting even longer. “I don’t think there is an end point,” he told People. “I think there is a lot of life in the show, as long as you let your characters grow and get older.”

They both got what they wanted and Blue Bloods will be back for season 12. Hopefully Danny and Frank will have a touching episode so fans can get a glimpse of the close relationship between the actors.
