Toni Braxton Starring in New Lifetime Movie Series About an Ex-Con-Turned-Detective
Toni Braxton wowed audiences during her unmasking as Pufferfish on The Masked Singer. But she’s continuing to have big moments. The award-winning singer serenaded Jada Pinkett Smith for her 50th birthday, much to the delight of fans and the Smith family. She also recently announced the launch of a beauty brand called Nude Sugar. And now, Braxton is set to return to the small screen in a Lifetime movie project.
Toni Braxton starring in Lifetime’s ‘The Fallen Angels Book Club’
No stranger to film or television, Braxton is an experienced actor and Broadway performer. Moreover, she’s worked with Lifetime network in the past. This time around, she’s signed on as an executive producer and lead for two movies based on The Fallen Angels Book Club, a book from R. Franklin James’ series.
Braxton will play the main character, Hollis Morgan, a former white collar criminal who’s pushed to solve a mystery in her book group. According to a press release from Lifetime, the inaugural film will introduce the character’s backstory.
In the first installment, the members of The Fallen Angels Book Club must have two things in common – a love for books and have a criminal record. Hollis Morgan (Braxton) meets both requirements. Left holding the bag in an insurance fraud scheme concocted by her ex-husband, Hollis served her time and now hopes the court will pardon her conviction so she can return to law school and fulfill her dream of becoming a lawyer. But when a member of her book club is murdered in a scene straight out of the previous night’s novel, Hollis once again becomes the subject of police scrutiny. Refusing to get stuck with another bad rap, Hollis sets out to investigate her fellow club members and after a second book-inspired murder, she races to identify the killer before she becomes the next victim.
Rhonda Baraka is attached to direct both movies which are due for a 2022 release.
R. Franklin James wrote 6 books in the series
Though Braxton and Lifetime are on board for two films, there are six books in James’ Hollis Morgan collection. Book one is just the first of several intertwined tales that tap into Morgan’s legal knowledge and expertise as a liar.
In some of the other stories, she chases after murderers, thieves, and greedy con artists. And readers follow her second-chance journey and eventual entry into practicing law.
Braxton has a history with Lifetime
Braxton’s relationship with Lifetime goes way back to 2013 when she starred in Twist of Faith. It was her first movie on the channel. She also executive produced and acted in two other TV projects in 2018: Faith Under Fire and Every Day Is Christmas.
Faith Under Fire chronicled Antoinette Tuff’s real-life encounter with a school shooter. Tuff, a Georgia bookkeeper, talked down a would-be shooter while on the line with 911 dispatchers. Braxton played the lead role and according to Lifetime, more than 8 million people tuned in to watch the film.
