Days of Our Lives has a large and loyal fan base. Each week, millions of fans tune in to watch the trials and travails of the Horton, DiMera, and Kiriakis families — and many more. But there are five gaping plotholes that not even the most devoted fans can explain away.

Some Days of Our Lives plotholes involve the characters of Billie Reed and Bo Brady, pictured here in a classic photo from the 1990s

5. John Black’s very existence is one of the biggest ‘Days of Our Lives’ plotholes

The long-suffering John Black has a backstory that keeps changing, and that makes it one of the biggest plotholes on Days of Our Lives. At first, people thought he was Roman Brady. Then it turned out he was part of the super-wealthy Alamain family. And then, all of a sudden, he was the love child of Santino DiMera and Colleen Brady — and single-handedly responsible for the long-running beef between the two families on the show.

Just who is this guy, anyway?

4. The Chloe surrogate mama situation

Let’s go back in time to July 2020, when Eric and Nicole were still an item on Days of Our Lives. (Seems like a lifetime ago, doesn’t it?) According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, at around this time, Chloe was a surrogate mother who gave birth to Holly Jonas.

Now, in order to enjoy soap operas, one has to be willing to suspend reality. But this surrogate mama situation is one of the biggest plotholes on the show. While the depiction of surrogacy in popular media makes it seem rather easy — hire a surrogate, pay her some money, have a baby — the reality of surrogacy is much different. For example, according to Creative Family Connections, laws vary from state to state. And in some states, surrogacy is completely illegal.

All this, of course, is to say that even if you completely suspend reality, there’s no way the drama that Chloe went through as a surrogate mother — such as fighting for custody (because according to Conceive Abilities, no state in the union allows for a surrogate mother to fight for custody of a surrogate child) — would even be close to real.

3. How are Ciara and Claire the same age?

Days of Our Lives fans can thank SORAS (Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome) for this plothole. In a nutshell, Ciara was born in 2008, but Claire was born in 2005. That means Claire is three years older than Ciara. Even with SORAS, there would be no way they’d be attending prom together. But in the 2015-2016 season, that’s exactly what happened. Whoops!

2. Sami’s post-partum snapback

Post-partum snapback isn’t just an Instagram trend. Fans of Days of Our Lives will recall that back in 2009, Sami (Alison Sweeney) gave birth to Sydney. Sydney, we’ll recall, had a bit of a “baby swap” situation — but that’s not the issue here, believe it or not.

The issue here is how fast Sami snapped back from the pregnancy. Almost immediately after she gave birth, Sami left Sydney with the nuns and returned to Salem.

What, no recovery? No downtime? Just pop out a baby and go? How is that not one of the biggest plotholes on the show?

1. Will is technically older than EJ on ‘Days of Our Lives’ — but the storyline doesn’t reflect that

EJ and Sami are a match made in hell — and thanks to this whopper of a Days of Our Lives plothole, we may finally know why.

Sami gave birth to Will in 1995. But EJ, Will’s stepfather, wasn’t born until 1997.

Yet, when Will was re-introduced in 2006, he was younger than EJ. How is that possible? Plotholes, that’s how!
